He looks like he has great resume but where would he fit in on the defensive staff?

DB coach.

If he is gonna be the DB's then what is what Roof gonna coach since him and Willis are both linebacker coaches?

Roof can call the plays? Focus on one thing?

He'll have to coach a postion. My guess would be either move James to DE's and Roof coach LB's or vise versa.

He doesn't Have to coach a certain position. From what I've heard, is that he'll be a floater (ie, oversee the entire Defense) and he'll be the man calling the plays with the help of, hopefully John Thompson, and Coach Chizik.

I have also heard that he would float around to help in all areas of the D.

Sort of a 12th man. ;)

I think I've proven that I'm anything but a negative nancy on this board, but is anyone else getting a little concerned that this staff is turning into a lot of chiefs and not a lot of indians?

If you ask me that is one hell of a good problem to have. That just means that the coaches are well qualified.

The coaches are the chiefs. The players are the braves.

I'm with you on that, if we were to hire Thompson, that'd be three DC's on our staff. As impressive as that sounds, l could see it getting gridlocked... and furthermore, why would we hire an extra Defensive coach to "float" while we have a Special Teams Coordinator who is splitting time as a tight ends coach? Seems to me that if anything on the staff needs to be a committed position, its special teams. I really like the way Frank Beamer and Urban Meyer really take ownership of their special teams and become very hands on in that aspect of the game.

All that said, I, like many am very excited about the way this staff is shaping up.

If CTF taught me one thing it is that there is no such thing as a "good problem to have" in football.

Frank Beamer lost his Special Teams "Beamer Ball" name a while ago. How often do I turn on a VT game (which is like once, maybe twice a year) and I hear "And Beamer gets a taste of his own game as they get Beamer Balled." My fiance, who is not a big sports fan (she went to Georgia Tech), even knows what Beamer Ball is because I always point out the irony of Beamer Ball going against VT when we do occasionally watch them.

And Urban Meyer - special teams? I guess I just have too many bad Special Teams moments sticking out in my mind. There was the 2006 blocked punt that turned the momentum of the Auburn game. The 2006 opening kickoff returned for a TD by Ohio State. The 2007 "Call a TO just before Auburn kicks the game winning FG" (not really a big deal, I just like mentioning that Auburn won). Oh yea and didn't UF's kicker not make a single FG for like the first half of the 2006 football season? I believe his first FG made was against Auburn.

I didn't mean that as a plug for VT or UF's special teams, just that I like that those particular coaches seem to take pride and ownership in their special teams. I'm with you on the Beamer ball abuse though.

Well, now that Rocker is on board, he says he'll be coaching all D-line positions, not splitting them up between interior/exterior coaches as we've done in the past. Don't know what that'll mean in terms of overall staff positions or specialties, however.

That means that we are also expected to hire a full-time DB coach, whereas before we held two DL coaches and had the DC coach DBs.

I think I knew where you were going. It just seems to me that a lot of head coaches talk about the importance of special teams. I think it is all PR hype to try to make it look like you care about everything.

Tuberville did the same thing. You'd hear his coaches "Well it's great because coach Tuberville would give us our own field to practice on and give us ample time to practice full speed." Then our FG kicker hits like 60% of his FGs, the kickoff coverage team lets the return team get to like the 35 and we have not much of a punt return game, outside of a couple of returns, the kickoff return team doesn't get past the 25 outside of a couple of returns it seems. The punting was usually pretty good - I'll give them that, but it just seemed like we kept hearing how Special Teams were important to Tuberville, yet they didn't show on the field very much.

Hearing that the "logical" hire is still John Thompson...I've also been told that if Thompson is hired he will be the first "thumbs-down" of the Chizik era from my top source.

Theres another name that would be exciting that I really hope ends up getting the job.
