Auburn extends offer to Daphne QB Robert Cooper

Daphne quarterback Robert Cooper received no recruiting attention from former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and his staff.

All that changed with the arrival of new coach Gene Chizik.

Cooper said Monday that he has received a scholarship offer from Chizik, a startling development for a player who started only one high school season at quarterback and who has offers from no other SEC schools.

Daphne coach Glenn Vickery said he has spoken with Auburn assistant James Willis, who confirmed the scholarship offer.

Cooper has not verbally committed.

Although he started at Daphne for just one season, Cooper said Chizik has indicated he would play quarterback at Auburn.

"I'm a quarterback first and foremost, and that's what I love to do," said Cooper, who admitted he could play tight end, wide receiver or safety "if it didn't work out at quarterback."

Finding a future star at quarterback is considered a priority for Auburn, considering Kodi Burns and Chris Todd struggled in 2008 and combined for just seven touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.

Auburn has also shown renewed interest in 2008 Mr. Football Clint Moseley, who led Leroy to three straight Class 2A state titles.

On Monday, Moseley said Willis left him a cell phone message on Sunday, but he had not talked to the coach and had not received a scholarship offer.

n 2008, Cooper completed 130-of-204 passes for 1,650 yards, with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for 507 yards and seven touchdowns on 98 carries, leading the Trojans to a 7-4 record and a Class 6A playoff berth.

Moseley threw for 3,758 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2008, leading Leroy to a 15-0 record.

Cooper's size — listed at 6-foot-3 on Daphne's roster, but he said he's grown to 6-4cm HALF and now weighs 215 pounds — likely makes him an intriguing prospect for Chizik.

Cooper said his only other offer is from UAB, where he visited over the weekend. He also received attention from Jacksonville State and Troy, which offered a chance to walk on.

Cooper said he has set up an official visit to Auburn for the weekend of Jan. 23.

"I'm having a blast," Cooper said of the recruiting process. "It's been pretty busy the last couple of weeks."

Cooper will likely become the third Daphne quarterback in the last few years to sign with a Football Bowl Subdivision team. Former Daphne star Pat White recently capped a record-breaking career at West Virginia, and his younger brother, Coley, signed with the Mountaineers last year.

Cooper said he believes their success has helped him.

"Anytime you've got an NCAA record-breaking quarterback, recruiters are going to come back to that guy's school," he said.

Vickery said Cooper opened doors for himself with a tireless work ethic.

"We have kids who work hard and get better," Vickery said. "They buy into it and work hard."

Doesnt anyone else think it's odd that Troy and Jack St. are offering him to walk on, while WE are the one's offering a full ride?

He played D before this year. Who knows where he winds up. Will Herring was a QB in high school

Cooper appears to have his priorities in order - good student.

Daphne quarterback Robert Cooper is visiting UAB this weekend, but he told The News today that he received an offer from Auburn "a few days ago." Cooper plans to make an official visit to Auburn Jan. 23.

He said he is not ready to make a decision on a college choice. The Birmingham News has not yet confirmed the offer.

A one-year starter at Daphne - he backed up as a junior while starting on defense - the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Cooper is rated a two-star prospect by Rivals.com.

UAB had been considered the favorite for Cooper, who has also received interest from Louisville.

Qualifying academically won't be a problem for Cooper, regardless of where he goes. He has a 3.5 GPA and scored a 27 on his ACT.

For more details, read The Birmingham News Saturday.

This is one of those "I see talent, and we think we can make it worth our while" kind of prospects. I think you can always benefit from getting kids like this in the long run. It opens doors for future prospects, and it provides the program a chance to grow a kid and prove it's ability.

One or two of these every year isn't a bad thing.

All I have to say is Spencer Pybus. :)

That's a nice, positive way to look at it!

New news is grayshirt offer as an ATH.

That's a little different than Josh Moon's version. UAB has offered him, but was it as a QB?

I thought I heard that Justin Albert was going to be a grayshirt last year, but I guess not:

Greyshirt is just a different way to say "Invited Walkon". If the player doesn't pan out, the school is under no obligation to offer a scholarship the next year. That may be what happened to Albert.
