Trent Richardson "I'm disappointed"

Just a quick update on the fact that Alabama outside linebackers coach Lance Thompson is taking a job on the Tennessee staff. I just spoke with five-star running back Trent Richardson, the Pensacola, Fla. native and one of Thompson's recruits.

What did he think?

"It's kind of surprising to me, and it's kind of hard on me," Richardson said. "He was my recruiter and I was closer to him than my position coach (Burton Burns) at Alabama. It's hard. I never thought this would happen to me."

Richardson hasn't spoken to Thompson yet, though he said he's been calling him all day. He did speak with Alabama coach Nick Saban, who seemed pretty frustrated.

"I talked to Coach Saban today," Richardson said, "and he was very surprised. He was kind of upset with the situation, too."

So, what does this mean for Trent's recruitment?

"Well, I'm just going to finish going through the recruiting process, get to February, sit down with my mom and talk it over with my family and my coaches at my school now," he said. "Let it ride like that. I'm going to keep my eyes open, take all my visits. I'm just kind of stressed."

Not exactly a resounding "I'm sticking with Bama."

Come on down to Auburn, Trent. If those Tulsa RBs can tear it up like they did, you'll do great at Runningback U.

The bammer loving local radio guy here was saying that Richardson was no longer a UAT recruit and was going to Tennessee. He was so miffed that he was saying there should be an NCAA rule stating that coaches couldn't switch jobs until after signing day so they couldn't pull recruits from other school. Completely irrational and ridiculous, but like I said, he's a bammer.

Funny, I didn't hear any of that kind of indignation when Auburn lost two DCs to Texas right after the season.

Really? I don't have time to dig it up in the search feature, but there's plenty of fodder out there.

And Texas isn't a rival.

Tennessee fans are lovin it! I live up in Vol country, and they are loving the fact that they are taking Bammers coaches for the same money they were offered to stay in T-Town. They say it is obvious Saban is A D#%#Head or else why would he leave. :cheer: KARMA :cheer:

I'm no lawyer, but on what legal grounds could the NCAA base such a thing? Since when would they have the power or authority to dictate when universities could hire employees?

And wouldn't that be the same NCAA Bammers wanted to sue and/or emasculate a few year ago? ...but now he wishes they had more power?

...as you said, irrational and ridiculous

UT doubled his salary...

UT doubled his salary...

Not according to Thompson himself. Speaking from Tennessee:

" Nick Saban ... actually offered me more money than I'm making here..."

Thompson made 225 thousand at bama, it's my understanding that he will make 450 at UT. Whether Saban offered more after he accepted the job at UT, I don't know.

That's awesome. Great find.

Ya'll take your bama crap somewhere else... This is an AU board .. :)

HEE HEE...now that's funny! :)

i still think he will stay with Alabama. i don't blame him for being stressed out about it, i imagined there would be a few guys scratching their heads over this. i don't think it would have been as big of a deal had UT asked permission and gone through the normal channels of speaking to Thompson. Clemson did that while talking to Steele and there was no issue with it. i think when you totally hide it and nobody has a clue until the coaches meeting thats when it causes a problem. i'm not saying Thompson is a bad guy or anything like that, as i'm sure he had his reasons for leaving. everybody knows CNS is not the easiest person to work for. they know that when they come on board. but UT is putting together one hell of a staff up there, no doubt. i hope CLT finds great success at UT......except against us :) in the short term, i don't see his departure hurting us with any guys for this class. but he will be missed in the Mobile area in the future.

If he really wants to go somewhere that the NFL knows produces pro-quality running backs no matter what decade it is, he'd come to Auburn. :)

William Andrews

Joe Cribbs

James Brooks

Lionel James

Bo Jackson

Tony Richardson

Fred Beasley

Stephen Davis

Rudi Johnson

Heath Evans

Cadillac Williams

Ronnie Brown

Just sayin'.

i don't really know much about those other guys (except Bo, obviously), but Cadillac and Ronnie Brown were freaks of nature out of high school. i don't really think there was much coaching to do there. football. hole. run. don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that there was absolutely no coaching attention given to them or anything like that. simply saying that AU didn't inherit two guys that were horrible and coached them into monsters or something. AU signed two incredibly talented guys and they delivered. now, it very well may have been the case with the other guys that AU just coached them into greatness from scratch, i just have no idea who they really are so i'm not going to say one way or another.

The point is not that we coached them into greatness anymore than BYU or USC over the years have coached great HS QBs into greatness. But the bottom line is, good RBs come to Auburn and make it big on the next level. For all of Florida's success and great recruiting, they haven't put half that many productive backs in the pros. And neither has Alabama. The pros know if a kid goes through Auburn and puts up good numbers, odds are he's going to be productive at the next level. It's Runningback U. Period.

Do we need to break out Tre Smith's 9th year of eligibility to serve you another piece of humble pie?

And wasn't Ronnie a 3 star out of high school? little coaching to make him better get drafted higher than Carnell who was great coming.

I'm pretty sure he was a 4 star. He was at least the #6 rb prospect in the SE, but I thought it was overall. My mind is a little vague but there was a lot of hype about him when he signed. It's a primary reason why I wasn't surprised when he was a beast.

I don't put much faith in "stars" because they're all so subjective and too many 4-stars seem to not pan out while 1-star recruits like Dontarrious Thomas make it to the pros. Ronnie Brown coming out of HS was a 2-sport athlete. He was actually drafted by the Mariners. Still, he wasn't as productive from the start like Carnell was. It took him 2 years to mature -- 3 if you count his redshirt year. He also said Carnell being on the team motivated him to workout more & improve himself. By his junior season he was a legit star.

If he really wants to go somewhere that the NFL knows produces pro-quality running backs no matter what decade it is, he'd come to Auburn. :)

Kenney Irons was a bench riding failure under Lou Holtz at SC. He led the SEC in rushing his first year at Auburn. He wasn't exactly a "freak of nature". He seemed to be shaping up to have some success in the league before his injuries.
