Typical lack of research b y espn, shallow research and reporting-I think sullivan to beasley was pretty exciting in 1971 Link to comment https://www.aufamily.com/topic/55570-most-prestigious-programs-of-all-time/#findComment-574488 Share on other sites
BZ770 2
Did you know? Auburn has only one major bowl appearance in the past 20 seasons (the 2005 Sugar Bowl vs. Virginia Tech), but it still ranks ahead of rival Alabama in the BCS era. Bama Played in the Sugar this year and lost, We did win the 05 Sugar, is this what they refer to "still ranks agead of rival Alabama in the BCC era? DCWarEagle 0
Someone asked about Auburn in one of ESPN's chats today: SEC homer (Auburn, Ala.): Auburn at No. 21? Surely, your math skills need some work. Why didn't the Tigers make the top 15? Chris Fallica : They only have the one national title, which weighs heavy. Losing all those points to probation ended up coasting them 39 points. But they got better through the decades. And over the last 20 years they only have the one major bowl, the Sugar Bowl, granted in the season they should have been playing for the national title. But in the BCS era you are ranked seven spots higher than Alabama, which I'm sure you'll be happy to hear. But they are one of the surprises for me personally, I did not expect them to be ranked lower than Georgia Tech or UCLA. Errr, since the BCS started, we've been to two BCS bowls: the Orange in 99 after the SEC title, and the 09 Sugar. SouthLink02 8
- Bama being outside the Top 5 surprised me - ND being inside the Top 5 surprised me - OU being #1 REALLY surprised me. I knew they had a great history but didn't know it was THAT GOOD. - NU being #5 also surprises me. Again, I know they had a good history but Top 5 overall? Didn't know it was THAT good. AU Cav 0
I heard Beano and Maisel talking about this in depth. Beano was surprised OU was on top and not ND, but they went into how dominant OU has been since the war. An interesting sidebar, OU's coach in 46 left to coach at Navy or Princeton and that is when they hired Wilkerson. If I were an OU fan I'd argue about him being the greatest of all time. Another interesting sidebar, OU is the only school to have 4 coaches win over 100 games. And now an outside bar, Beano said that OU was driven to be the best at football because of the fallout of Grapes of Wrath. It was such an embarrassment to them that they wanted to prove something to the world. Beano is awesome to listen too, but sometimes you gotta wonder And the Tiki bar, I think NU has that sick record of consecutive winning seasons, but I'm about as trustworthy and reliable on this fact as James Willis. SouthLink02 8
Still, I would have thought their sanctions would knock them below USC or someone I know OU isn't #1 in sanctions but boy o boy when they do cheat, it is nasty Link to comment https://www.aufamily.com/topic/55570-most-prestigious-programs-of-all-time/#findComment-577723 Share on other sites
