Something U Probably already knew

Having a veteran QB at the helm is considered a major plus in football. Here is how the data pans out for Auburn.

From 1982-2008:

3 Fr QB's / 112.6 rating / .529 win pct

5 So QB's / 116.1 rating / .525 win pct

11 Jr QB's / 125.7 rating / .697 win pct

11 Sr QB's / 131.3 rating / .783 win pct

Returning QB's in the mix for 2009:

Kodi Burns (Jr)

Chris Todd (Sr)

Neil Caudle (Jr)

Barrett Trotter (RFr)

With a new offense being installed by Malzahn, talent and ability might be a key for the Auburn starting QB than experience. It should be a wide open race in the Spring.

I just increased your football IQ by 2.3 pts.

Nothing against Burns, Todd & Caudle, but Barrett Trotter may be the starter by the end of spring.

Honestly I think the only reason people are talking so highly of Barrett Trotter is because he is the only one who we haven't seen play yet. He may in fact be very good, but come on guys lets get off the whole admiration of the backup QB.

Stat - I feel so much smarter now. So, from your lesson we stand having a better record in this order:

1. Todd

2. Burns, Caudle

3. Trotter, Moseley, Rollison

4. No sophomores at QB (?)

What about Rollison? If he qualifies, will he have a shot? From what I've read about him, he's got great poise in the pocket....can run out of trouble exceptionally well when needed, and has pin point accuracy.

I wonder what Malzan's track record is starting freshmen?

not really sure if it has anything to do with Malzahn. Inexperienced QB's get smoked in the SEC.

Look at last season. The teams with experience in the QB position (UGA, UF, Alabama, Ole Miss) did well while the teams with inexperienced QB's (AU, LSU, USC, UT) all suffered.

Even if he qualifies, he won't be here in the Spring and the other QB's will a major jump on him. For this reason, I believe he is headed for a RS unless the other 4 QB's struggle in the new offense. I kind of see what IndyTiger is saying about Trotter. Because we have not seen him actually play on the field, I think many are excited about what he might be able to do.

I went back and looked at his highlight videos today and was kind of concerned about his arm strength. It was difficult to tell because the majority of his passes were within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage. Malzahn believes in a vertical passing game and I can't wait to see AU stretching the field vertically.

We have a winnah!

If there's to be a surprise at QB, I'd think Caudle is more likely to be the surprise guy than Trotter. Caudle's a RS Junior who was highly regarded out of HS. The injuries that have bothered him may now be in the past.

My expectations are that Kodi Burns will be the guy for the next two years, but predictions ain't my strong point.

Actually I saw him play in HS & at several practices this past summer. At this point I am not even saying Kodi will lose the starting job. He may blossom with a new coach. My comment had more to do with what I have seen from Trotter and IF the other QB's struggle.

I thought CGM started a true freshman @ Arkansas. Casey Dick, maybe? There were obvious growing pains but he made it work. Correct me if I am wrong.

Malzahn did start a TF at QB but it was Mitch Mustain. Nutt made Malzahn change QB's at midseason and Casey Dick (So) finished the season as the starting QB.
