Obama & dems looking for a 60 vote majority

While the Coleman/Franken election remains in limbo, the Obama administration may have solved the problem of getting that 60th Senator who would caucus with the Democrats:

Judd Gregg: Commerce Secretary?

January 29, 2009 06:38 PM

There is a strong possibility that Barack Obama will ask Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) to serve as his Secretary of Commerce, Democratic Senate aides tell the Huffington Post.

The move would fill a vacancy that has lingered since Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew his nomination. And provided that Al Franken emerges victorious in the Minnesota recount, it would give Democrats in the Senate a 60th caucusing member, as New Hampshire's Democratic governor John Lynch would appoint Gregg's replacement.

Asked for a response, White House spokesman, Bill Burton, in an email to the Huffington Post, said the "president hasn't made a pick yet."

The potential of Gregg leaving the Senate will almost certainly set off an intense lobbying effort from his fellow Republican senators to persuade him to turn down the Commerce post. Already, a GOP operative writes in to say: "No way that Gregg takes it."

With the "stimulus" bill not expected to be passed until mid February, this gives the Democrats plenty of time to get a new Democratic Senator on-board - assuming a Gregg nomination comes within a day or so and assuming Gregg accepts.

What a group of anarchists..........careful, they will stop at nothing to reach their facist/anti-American ends!

Anarchists?

I respect your right to your view...but kind of a mixed metaphor there: Anarchists are diametrically opposed to the concept of big, all-powerful government, fascist or otherwise...

I now return everyone to the original debate.

12 hours later and back to the original debate--another thought:

Trying to say this in a non-partisan way:

What's inherently wrong with either party trying to extend its power? Isn't that pretty much what parties are supposed to do? Philosophically, sure, a healthy government is one with a healthy opposition and I wouldn't want to become a one-party nation. But in reality, both Republicans and Democrats want to increase their power. I have no doubt that GOP would do everything they could to reach 60 votes if they were only one or two votes away--it's the nature of politics--and I wouldn't blame them for doing so (within the letter of the law). Would any of you be criticising the tactics if the roles were reversed and the GOP were on the cusp of 60 votes with a Republican in the Oval Office? What, is a party suppose to turn down a Senate seat because "we don't think we should have so many votes"?

I'll admit, taking someone into your Cabinet from the other side of the aisle in order to to free up his seat in the Senate is a new twist to me. And also fraught with danger if that person proved to be a divisive, incompetent, or disloyal force on the Cabinet. (Although I seriously doubt that's Obama's sole reason for nominating Gregg, if that's how it ends up.) Call it creative, original, or just sneaky, but I can't call it "wrong".

Again, a one-party state is not a healthy state, but a party trying to increase its power is not inherently evil. Fire away at Democratic policy--that's your right. But why attack a party for trying to get more votes?

That being said, it will be interesting to watch what Sen. Gregg decides to do under these circumstances if Obama goes forward with his nomination.

Emotion exposed, sorry.

These alinsky anarchists don't care how they do it, just a means to an end.

Oh I'm sorry again, community organizers. <_<

Loon.

If Obama wants to extend a cabinet position to a Republican Senator, that's his choice. It's as much his choice as it is Sen. Gregg's to accept or decline. Yet, you chime in with frivolous hogwash about "freedom" -- spinning the bipartisan appointment of a GOP Senator from a Democratic president into some attack on American freedom. I suppose appointing a conservative to be the Secretary of Commerce is another step in achieving our "anti-American" ends. Chuckle.

Turn the dial away from Rush, remove the tinfoil from your head, and open up that mind a little. You certainly may not agree with everything President Obama says or does, but at least spare anyone around you from having to be exposed to your fanatical beliefs. The sane will thank you.

Gregg conservative? Loon.

He's not Sessions-conservative, but he's undeniably right of center.

And his state has a Democrat governor. , sure to replace Gregg with a left of center choice and fellow traveler.

Obama, the benevolent benefactor.

Smart politics. No?

If we could only get rid of the misinformation on this board...

Apparently, there's a deal between Sen. Judd Gregg, Gov. John Lynch and President Obama; Gregg will accept the appointment as Commerce Secretary provided he's replaced by a Republican.

"I have had conversations with Senator Gregg, the White House and U.S. Senate leadership. Senator Gregg has said he would not resign his seat in the U.S. Senate if it changed the balance in the Senate. Based on my discussions, it is clear the White House and Senate leadership understand this as well," Lynch said.

"It is important that President Obama be able to select the advisors he feels are necessary to help him address the challenges facing our nation.

"If President Obama does nominate Senator Gregg to serve as Commerce Secretary, I will name a replacement who will put the people of New Hampshire first and represent New Hampshire effectively in the U.S. Senate," he said.

If only people would include all information on this board.

A new name is circulating among New Hampshire politicians as a likely pick to replace US Senator Judd Gregg if he is appointed Commerce Secretary: J. Bonnie Newman, a Republican with close ties to both Gregg and the state's Democratic governor, John Lynch, and extensive Washington experience.

The White House has not announced a decision on the cabinet slot, and Democratic Governor John Lynch has revealed nothing about whom he might consider if Gregg gets the job. But Newman's resume and Lynch's appointment history make her seem like a logical possibility.

Consider: Newman served as assistant secretary of Commerce for economic development in the Reagan administration. She was in charge of administrative operations for the George H.W. Bush White House.

She was chief of staff to Gregg when he was a congressman in the 1980s, and she was one of the first Republicans to publicly endorse Lynch in his 2004 challenge of then-Republican Governor Craig Benson, and co-chaired Republicans for Lynch.

She has held a number of high-profile positions in higher education, including several important posts at the University of New Hampshire (including interim president) and executive dean of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She has also led the New Hampshire Business and Industry Association.

That is just the kind of resume that Lynch, who emphasizes competence and experience in his appointments, would likely favor. But would a Democratic governor really appoint a Republican, especially when Gregg's departure opens the possibility of Democrats gaining a 60-vote supermajority in the Senate?

This one might. Lynch casts himself as a bipartisan politician. He appointed Republicans as his attorney general and commissioner of Environmental Services, and he endorsed a GOP state senator over a Democratic challenger (and longtime state representative) last year.

He stayed out of the presidential primary (he did take the stage with John McCain when he appeared in Hopkinton, Lynch's hometown) and he played a low-profile role in the presidential general election, even though New Hampshire was a closely fought battleground state.

If he picked Newman, Lynch would certainly irritate New Hampshire Democrats. But they might be more inclined to forgive him if Newman promises not to run in 2010, when Gregg's term is up -- which would still put them ahead of where they are now, with a relatively popular incumbent Republican in the Senate seat.
