Demond Washington commits...

Well, he's a 5-star CB/RB (on Scout, 3-star on Rivals). He's JUCO so he's only got 2 years of eligibility I believe.

5' 10", 185, and runs a 4.3 according to both sites, though some here dispute that. What I saw on video made me think he's at least sub 4.5 if not 4.4. Here's Scott Kennedy's assessment over at Scout (free content):

A stallwart in the defensive backfield and on special teams, Washington is the total package at the corner position. He's physical in run support, makes quick reads in coverage, closes well, and makes good plays on the ball in the air. Difficult to find an "area for improvement", but all corners can work on reading the play and jamming the receiver at the line. Should be an immediate contributor on the next level.

Reportedly we're wanting him for running back and as a returner, though he could play some of both if needed.

5 * on scout and 3 * on rivals? and that's before the auburn commitment. Now that he's committed, rivals will probably drop him to a 2* since he committed to auburn.

I guess he just couldn't wait until signing day huh?

From what I've read, he commited to whoever would let him play RB right? Does this lessen our chances with Oku? We'll have McCalleb, Jacobs, Washington, and if Oku if that were to happen. I'm all about having a stable of good backs, but with Tate, Fannin and Smith already on the team, I have a hard time believing we'd take 4 backs. Does Jacobs maybe end up at LB?

I think the guy will play corner too, but are we looking at the same roster when you guys talk about needing help in the secondary? Really? McFadden is a clear number one corner if he improves at all. Neiko Thorpe had a fantastic year for a freshman. Aairon Savage is coming back. Zac Etheridge and Mike McNeil are back. D'Antone Hood got solid PT, and Mike Slade played pretty well down the stretch. In my eyes, with or without Demond Washington, the secondary was going to be the strength of the defense.

We need much help in the secondary.. I sure hope he will help out there.

He'd get more playing time at CB, one would think. PT is what most players want.

IIRC, Carlos Dansby came in as a receiver, became a great LB, and is playing in SB XLIII tomorrow.

I'm 5 for 8 so far on my p predictions and I'm going out on a limb and go ahead and predict that we have Phillips and Farms before Wednesday. Oku is a long shot but I wouldn't bet the farm we don't get him as well. Now, if we could get Patrick. Come on down Tana and join the good crowd of class people.

I think I've beaten this to death, but if he's playing RB then it is only a decent pick-up IMO. I'm not overly blown away with his play at RB and he is clearly a much better corner.

Agree whole-heartedly. Talked to an OM guy early this morning who flat out said "Demond told Nutt he needed a couple more days and Nutt told him if that was the case, he needed to go ahead and go to Auburn."

That was before the announcement went public. Makes me wonder if Demond picked Auburn or if Ole Miss picked Auburn for him.

I'm hoping the kid ends up playing CB. If he contributes at RB, I'm fine with that... I just don't see it happening.

Incidentally, his commitment moved Auburn into the top 15 in the rankings on Scout:

It's odd because the team rankings on the front page show us at 21 and the team rankings here show us at 15. I wonder why the front page isn't updating.

Seems like a natural corner to me, I see no reason to play him at RB, with the players we already have there and the ones possibly coming in. This could also be a double blessing in that it might free up Harry Adams to possibly move back to wide receiver and would give us two deep threats in Pierre Louis and Adams if they can both be healthy.

Neither of those are going out on a limb. Farms apparently took his visit without telling anyone at UNC and there are rumblings that he could have his offer pulled, and Phillips is apparently down to Auburn and Arkansas at which point we likely have the edge with us getting the last visit and his teammate already committing and recruiting him.

Your sig makes me a little sick to my stomach. Go back to the "mugs."

Sorry. Mug is back. ;)

Although I am truly afraid of what your answer might be-What exactly is your sig a picture of anyway??? :gofig:

That is beer brewing in my closet. Homebrew.

I'm not sure why DW would want to get in line to play RB anyway. He only has 2 years of eligibility left. it seems that he would have a better chance to make a name for himself as a return man and CB.

I hope you're both right! And if so, I'd think that would have to help us with Oku...I mean what RB wouldn't want to run behind those two on the line?

This kinda scares me

Oku

He further underscored his strong preference not play for a team that runs a spread offense in the story written by Dave Hooker.

We all know everyone likes to call CGM a spread offense guy, especially when it benefits negative recruiting.

I imagine CGM has had a good opportunity to explain his offense to Mr. Oku, and the fact that Malzahn prefers to run more than pass, especially with the defense spread out. That, and the fact that Auburn is a better place to live and get an education than Knoxville.

Disclaimer: I am very prejudiced. :)

But then as of this morning:

...

Oku said he likes what Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is doing.

"Basically his offense is not fair from what I've seen." Oku said. "It's not fair with some of the trick plays he has done. I was laughing at the plays because the defense didn't know what was going on."

...

Oku said he tried to lay low at the Auburn basketball game Saturday. He couldn't.

Suddenly I just saw this big 'ol poster go up. 'Running Back U is waiting for Oku' and 'Oku for Heisman.' "

He said visiting Auburn and Syracuse has him thinking about whether to sign with Tennessee.

"I'm not solid anywhere yet,"
