Blake Burgess

Rick of Rick and Bubba announced on the show this morning that his son Blake Burgess committed to Auburn this weekend. I don't know his measurables or star ratings, but I know that Rick says he on the small side. Hopes are that he can put on weight and not lose speed.

:au: Heart is not measured by Stars. I don't know much about the Burgess boy but he sounds like a project; He is a 6'4'' and 235 lineman meaning lots of work in the weight room and a lot of training table food to make him competitive. Burgess doesn't turn 18 for another month so he is real young compared to a lot of athletes. I see a lot of recruits nationwide that are approaching 20 as Freshmen (how do you not get out of high school until you are 20?). Obviously, he would be a redshirt. But that doesn't mean he won't be a big help 2 or 3 years down the road.

Is this an actual offer for this year or invited walk-on or grayshirt? I will be honest withyou, this is somewhat dissapointing if this a full scholarship for this year. It means we have lost out on some other lineman. I have seen him play a few times over the years and never thought he was Div 1A material. And by the way you do not sign/waste scholarships on PR purpsoses.

Sure you do. Every three or four years you sign someone who will help the program out in the long run. It's not uncommon. If they are borderline in deserving a scholly talent-wise, you weigh the other benefits of them being on the team. I, for one, don't think this is a bad thing. How many scholarship players from a given year actually contribute anyway? Why not occasionally use a scholly for political reasons?

I actually think that Senderrick Marks was one of these. With the talent rising in Mobile, Tubs knew that he had to make inroads in Prichard. Marks was not the most sought after player, and we decided to offer him. Did we see that much potential in him? Perhaps. Did we see this as an opportunity to make inroads at a place that was difficult for us? Sure. Interestingly, offering Marks apparently didn't help our relationship with Vigor, and he turned out to be a much better player than anyone thought. The PR didn't work, but the player panned out better than expected.

Very wrong. Marks was a stud with huge upside, just slipped through the cracks and didn't get the notice he should have. Everyone in Mobile knew he was big-time.

Sure you do. I'm not saying you should, but stuff like that happens. Schollies get "wasted" for various reasons. How many times have schools given scholarships to the friend/brother/cousin/... of a stud recruit as an enticement for that recruit to commit?

I'm 99% sure he said that he had offers from Auburn, Clemson, Murray State, Jacksonville State and one other school (not FBS). It came down to Blake believing that he can compete at the FBS level and decided Auburn was a better fit than Clemson. The word offers was used and there will be a ceremony at his HS on signing day. I doubt there are ceremonies for walkons.

If Burgess can add strength and weight while maintaining speed, he can play.

In 2007, he was listed as 6'3", 225 lbs with a 4.72 40-yard dash. link: http://hsalabama.scout.com/a.z?s=383&p...2%2f706288.html

He's now listed as 6'4", 240 lbs. on site I linked earlier and Ht: 6-foot-4

Wt: 260 lbs on this site: http://alabama.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=88328

Ben Nowland was 260 lbs. when he came to AU.

He's young for a high school senior, and probably not through growing. I haven't been able to confirm his GPA/ACT score, but you don't play center without smarts. Who knows, he may be an AA one day?

Burgess will be a walk-on. I hope Dad Rick understands that or we will not get good PR.

From what he said this morning on the show, he didn't seem to indicated a walk-on situation. He never said scholarship, only the word offer and that Blake had committed.

Burgess to Become Invited Walk-On at Auburn

Vestavia Hills, Ala.—Lineman Blake Burgess of Vestavia Hills High School has accepted at spot on the Auburn football team as an invited walk-on.

El Linko

I feel sure they all know what Invited walk-on means.

There may be a ceremony for all of the kids who are going to be playing at the next level and signing letters of intent that they're going to include him in. Every school is different. Some only focus on the ones who got scholly offers while others include anyone that's signing to play for some team in college.

My freshman year roommate was an "invited walk-on". The difference is huge because you have the coaches' attention much more than regular walk-ons and therefore your chances of contributing (other than as a blocking dummy) are much better.

fwiw, w/ that frame @ age 18, putting on good weight quickly will NOT be an issue.

He will sign a letter of intent. Being an invited walk on means you have the option for a scholarship if one comes open down the road. His father said he is actually 6'4 235 and played center do to team needs. So you may see him at another position. He had firm offers from Jax State, Samford, Murray State, and invited walk ons from Clemson and AU.

We must be doing something right if an AHSA 1st Team Class 6A All-State center wants to walk on at Auburn. Blake's heart is obviously in the right place, and he may end up surprising the so called experts. WAR DAMN EAGLE!!!

The starting center from the 2004 team, Jeremy Ingle, was a walk-on.
