Auburn85 438
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...itics&tsp=1 Kelly Zito, Chronicle Staff WriterHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowed Sunday to push for more jobs and increased aid to states, as Congress battles over details of an economic stimulus plan aimed at pulling the nation out of a financial tailspin. During an appearance in San Francisco, Pelosi expressed disappointment in certain aspects of a Senate proposal competing with a House plan, but she did not signal she would torpedo the Senate bill. Instead, she said she would press her case if the Senate version is passed. "We won't stop fighting no matter what the outcome of this bill is," Pelosi said. The stimulus plans offered by the House and Senate share many elements. However, the Senate bill relies more heavily on tax cuts and provides $40 billion less to state governments. Pelosi said that would result in 600,000 fewer jobs than the House bill and would mean nationwide layoffs for police, firefighters, teachers and health care providers. The House bill would create 4 million jobs, Pelosi said, as well as more funding for infrastructure, food stamps, school construction, unemployment benefits and renewable energy. "The bill (the House) passed is the bill President Obama wanted," she said. "It is a rejection of the policies that got us here in the first place. ... It's a message of vision and change for the future." Republicans, who insist that tax cuts are the fastest way to economic recovery, say the Obama- and Democrat-supported House bill is loaded with pork and would create a financial disaster. Pelosi, decked out in a maroon apron over a pinstriped pantsuit, spoke at a Tenderloin soup kitchen where she served the 60-year-old St. Anthony Foundation's 35 millionth meal. The San Francisco congresswoman said St. Anthony's serves those living on the edge and as such is a metaphor for the assistance government should give in difficult economic times. "The free market goes through up and down cycles," she said. "In order for the free market to succeed in the up days, there needs to be a safety net." As pressure is mounting to jolt an economy battered by foreclosures, bank failures and low consumer confidence, Pelosi said Republicans favor policies of the previous administration: "prosperity for the few rather than honoring the work of the many." She criticized her bill's opponents for attacking the legislative process and personalities in the face of policies that offered real change. "The special interests no longer have control," she said. Pelosi spoke to about a dozen or so media outlets after serving a meal of chicken stew, rice, vegetables and cupcake to Gigi Serafino, 12. Serafino and her grandfather, Winston Lee, showed up Sunday to volunteer, as they have for the last six years. "It's a wonderful coincidence," Lee said, adding that only a couple of days ago he was explaining the details of presidential succession to his granddaughter and now, in front of them, was the woman who is next in line after the vice president. "And here she was," Lee said, "and she served Gigi the 35 millionth meal." "It is a rejection of the policies that got us here in the first place. ... It's a message of vision and change for the future." So we plan to spend more than they ever thought about spending. "The bill (the House) passed is the bill President Obama wanted," she said. "The free market goes through up and down cycles," she said. "In order for the free market to succeed in the up days, there needs to be a safety net." Then it wouldn't be a free market would it? Auburn85 438
from an earlier version of this spending bill, about 90% is allegedly going to be in the private sector. about 10% will be government sector. so "about 10%" could i guess mean 10,11,12,13%?
