StatTiger 3,188
Previously, I sorted the passing data from games where SEC teams were held to under 100-yards rushing during this current decade. Another factor to consider when evaluating a pass offense is the overall production of the passing game, when at least 30 pass attempts are made during a game. I sorted the data by win pct and I included each teams pass rating. Team ........................ Gms W L PCT Rating Florida ........................ 69 47 22 0.681 139.4 LSU ............................ 54 35 19 0.648 127.2 Georgia ...................... 56 36 20 0.643 130.6 Tennessee .................. 60 34 26 0.567 125.5 Auburn ....................... 32 17 15 0.531 121.3 Ole Miss ...................... 65 28 37 0.431 122.6 S. Carolina .................. 50 19 31 0.380 117.7 Alabama ...................... 45 17 28 0.378 116.5 Kentucky ..................... 76 25 51 0.329 119.7 Arkansas ..................... 32 9 23 0.281 108.1 Vanderbilt .................... 46 8 38 0.174 114.9 Miss State .................... 53 8 45 0.151 100.1 During this current decade, the Florida Gators had the highest pass rating in games, where they attempted at least 30 pass attempts during a game. Their rating of 139.4 translated to the highest win pct with the Gators posting a 47-22 record. Florida, LSU and Georgia were the only three teams within the conference to post a win percentage above 60%. Once again, Mississippi State had the worst record (8-45) and the lowest pass rating at 100.1. In the 53 games MSU attempted at least 30 passes, they threw for 54 TD's and 93 interceptions, while completing only 51.5% of their passes. Mississippi State was the only team from the conference to average below 6-yards per pass attempt. Auburn had the 6th highest win percentage in the conference with a 17-15 record. In the 32 games Auburn attempted at least 30 passes, they threw 43 interceptions and 43 TD passes. Auburn's Ranking within the Conference: Completion Pct ......... 2nd Avg per att ............... 4th Avg per com ............. 5th INT ratio ................... 9th TD ratio .................... 8th Pass Rating .............. 6th SEC Leaders: Completion Pct .......... Florida Avg per Att ................ Florida Avg per Com .............. Georgia INT ratio .................... Georgia TD ratio ...................... Florida Pass Rating ................ Florida Observations: The Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs cornered the market on the six major passing categories. Auburn's passing game fell into the bottom half of the conference when it came to INT and TD ratio, which explains the slightly above .500 record in games when at least 30 pass attempts were made. The top three teams (Florida, LSU and Georgia) in win percentage, accounted for 8 of the last 9 SEC Champions. Though LSU has maintained a strong running game this decade, their passing game has been essential in delivering when called upon. As long as these three teams continue to be productive in the passing game, they will continue to attract the top HS prospects at the QB and WR positions. From 2000-2004, Auburn was 11-7 in games where they attempted at least 30 passes and 6-8 from 2005-2008. During the last 4 years, Auburn has thrown only 14 TD passes in the 14 games the Tigers attempted at least 30 passes. This includes 21.6 PPG and only 6.6 yards per pass attempt. When Tommy Tuberville hired Tony Franklin, it was obvious he wanted to upgrade Auburn's passing game but the offensive staff was never on the same page and it was a disaster destined to happen from the outset. Coach Gus Malzahn brings to Auburn a better resume than Franlkin and he will benefit from having assistants that will work with him and not against him. FYI Stat... From 1986-2008, Auburn is 22-44-2 (.338) against D1 opponents that finished the season with a winning record in games AU attempted at least 30 passes. During the Tuberville era, Auburn was 8-21-0 (.276). Link to comment https://www.aufamily.com/topic/56303-most-reliable-passing-game-part-ii/ Share on other sites

However, not to nit-pick you post, but don't sell Auburn short. Auburn is 5th in winning percentage and 6th in passer rating per your stats. I also find it interesting that we have about half the total number of games with at least 30 passes than the other top 6 teams. Running Back U I guess. I would also assume the bottom six were playing from behind a lot. I would have to really breakdown the numbers but I would guess that many of Florida, LSU and UGA games with 30 pass attempts were by design. I've always believed in being a run first team but becoming more efficient in the passing game, would make AU a better team. There were several warning signs before Tony Franklin coached his first game at Auburn but I don't see it with Malzahn for the following reasons... 1) He truly believes in running the ball to set up the pass. 2) He schemes his offense to match his personnel rather than forcing his system on his players. 3) His passing game is far more vertical than Franklin's. 4) Malzahn's inflated numbers comes from quality where as Franklin's success at Troy was based on quantity of plays. For the record, Malzahn's offenses are 14-9 (.609) when attempting at least 30 passes.
