University of Texas System regents today unanimously approved a new compensation package for Will Muschamp that will pay him $900,000 as the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator and at least $2 million when he succeeds Mack Brown as head coach.

Muschamp, who in November was named Brown’s successor, is guaranteed an annual salary of anywhere from $2 million to $2.5 million or more when he becomes head coach. No date for that succession has been announced, and several years remain on Brown’s contract, which has a base salary of $2.9 million. UT System records say Brown will assume another position at UT when he no longer wishes to serve as head coach.

Like Brown, Muschamp will be eligible for additional compensation as head coach depending on the team’s performance on the field and in the classroom.

Muschamp’s new salary of $900,000 doubles what he had been paid. The package consists of $850,000 in base salary, $30,000 in speaking fees and $20,000 for camps.

If he is head coach as of Jan. 1, 2010, his guaranteed annual pay will be $2 million. It will increase to $2.25 million in January 2011 and to $2.5 million in January 2012. As of January 2013, it would be negotiated to an unspecified figure greater than $2.5 million.

Contract is a LOT of money

I am interested to see how powerful it really is though....is UT's D sucks the next 2-3 years....can Texas get out of it? What happens if a powerhouse program wants Muschamp in 2-3 years and Mack Brown shows no signs of quitting?

Did they also pay for the leash around his neck?

I'm wondering the same thing.....

Yeah, I have nothing against muschamp and dont blame him for taking this. I did get tired of people wanting him to be the hc here when he has done absolutely nothing to show he's ready for that. Everyone was claiming he is so ready to be the hc here or tenny or wherever. Well, if he is so ready why take this deal when you can make a few million right off the bat and be the top dog.

To me this shows that he is acknowledging one of two things, or both. 1. He just isn't ready. 2. He has no fire in his belly to be a hc.

Don't even try to say that he is ready and has some fire in his belly, but is just willing to be mack browns beeeetch for years to land a real cherry job.

I wonder if Willy the Clown was too busy to read the contract the day it was presented to him or he is just going to wait a week to get around to reading it so he can point out something else he wants added to the back page?

Or it shows that he'd rather be the head coach at a consistent top ten program with a state filled with top prospects year in and year out. I don't believe it shows anything near your two points up there.

He's already making close to a million at his current status so why not wait and take over for a program like Texas? Besides, I'm sure other factors weighed in on his choice to stay (moving the family constantly for a couple years, etc.).

Texas is about as big a HC job as there is. Same with FSU & Jimbo Fisher. All you need to do is look what happens when "fire in the belly" wins out over patiently waiting for the right job -- I present as evidence Gene Chizik's foray to ISU. I don't fault Muschamp one bit. He's getting paid a HC salary at practically any mid-major to be the DC & Coach-in-Waiting at a plum job like Texas.

I don't blame him for taking it. My point is that so many were making out like he was the second coming and ready and wanted for a HC position at AU and Tenny. I didn't and don't think he was/is. If he was wanted at tenny then why not take that one? They are capable of winning nc's. He could have gotten 2.5-3 million (kiffinn only got 2 mil due to the fact they bankrolled his dad at like 1.2 mil). If he is so ready to step up imo he would be a fool not to take that. He could go prove himself at a fertile SEC stomping ground where even phil fulmer could win a mnc and make 3 times the money or more. If he is the stuff that some think he is UT would be glad to have him after he proved himself at UT.

My point was that IF he was a choice for tenny and that kind of money and chose to wait it out as mack browns boy there is something written between the lines there. If you are a hungry young coach you just don't pass up that kind of opportunity. You don't say, "I think I'll stay here for 5 years or more and be an assistant, instead of taking a shot at a big time school". My guess is that either tenny, or he , or all parties involved recognize that he just isn't ready yet. Maybe he thinks he is, but just has no fire to be a HC soon.

You can't tell me that everyone thinks he is ready, he could have gone to an AU or Tenny caliber school, and has fire in his belly to be a head coach, and decided to sign on to be macks boy for 5 years or more. It doesn't add up.

He would rather set back and take his $900k and get handed the keys to the Bentley instead of getting millions to have to turn around another school.

I do not blame him there. Take over a top program with little effort or get a program that needs to be turned around. Seems like a easy choice.

Yeah, unless you throw the fact that he will have to wait 5 years or more for his shot.

In that 5 yrs he will make 4.5 mil with UT while if he were the HC at Tenny for example and was half as capable as some think he is he could easily clear 15 million in that time frame. If he were successful he would then have a shot at just about any major job that opened up, including texas. Instead he decided to place his nads in a glass jar in Mack Browns office.

And don't use jimbo fisher as an example. He was passed up again and again for jobs before he accepted second fiddle at FSU and has been far from a world beater since he arrived there.
