2009 vs. 1979

As CBS News Sunday Morning commemorates its 30th anniversary, this poll examines Americans’ views on some key issues today compared to three decades ago when the program first aired.

http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/SunMo_poll_0209.pdf

This is interesting data that covers a range of topics: every thing from how often Americans attend religious services to what they think about nuclear power. Review the information contained within and ask yourself, if we are moving closer or further away from being a center-right nation. Number shifts that jumped out to me included Americans' opinions on domestic vs. foreign cars, homosexuality, legalizing marijuana, news sources, and health insurance.

I don't buy some of the answers. Sorry, but I am skeptical of anything that comes from the mainstream media.

Great example is the answer on homosexuality.

Only 41% say it's wrong????? Hell, over 50% in California were against the legal marriage of homosexuals. I would say it's more like 60% say it's wrong. If you believe in natural selection, you would not be for homosexuality.

Sorry, but I don't buy it!

One thought on that example, not having a problem with a life style and being in favor of legalizing it, is not exactly the same thing. Notice, in the question about marijuana, they specifically asked if people were in favor of legalizing it (Now - 41% , 1979 - 27%) ... but this is different than asking if people think using marijuana is right or wrong. So, I'm not sure you can draw a straight line between this data and a vote in California about legal marraige for homosexuals.

Whether you think this is faulty MSM polling data or not, the source is consistent. It's not like the NYT did the poll in '79 and Rasmussen performed it today. Some of the shifts over the 30 year period on specific cultural issues is what I found interesting. Also, how the public has changed their opinion of healthcare really surprised me:

Health Insurance: Private Enterprise vs. Government?

1979

Private Enterprise: 48%

Government - All Problems: 28%

Government - Emergencies: 12%

Don't know: 12%

2009

Private Enterprise: 32% (-16%)

Government - All Problems: 49% (+21%)

Government - Emergencies: 10% (-2%)

Don't know: 9% (-3%)

Private industry loses 16% and a full government healthcare solution gains 21%. A full 37% swing.

Our country hasn't been exposed to government ran healthcare like many of our European and Canadian allies.

Ask the country if they trust the government, and then come back to this.

Thirty years of dunning with misinformation can do that.

Did the BCS decide these rankings?

Seriously, what is the basis for the rankings? America has the best healthcare, it may the most expensive, but it is the best. I assume these rankings are based on cost to the customer (and that the rankings do not consider taxes a cost).

4 Andorra - The people of Andorra are currently listed as having the second highest human life expectancy in the world, at an average of 83 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andorra

18 United Kingdom – Almost everyday there are horror stories about the health care system in the U.K.

22 Colombia – For some reason I find it hard to accept at face value a list that has Columbia this high.

30 Canada - Why do so many Canadians come to the U.S. for treatment?

35 Dominica - For some reason I find it hard to accept at face value a list that has Dominica this high.

36 Costa Rica - For some reason I find it hard to accept at face value a list that has Costa Rica this high.

37 United States of America

38 Slovenia - For some reason I find it hard to accept at face value a list that has Slovenia this high.

39 Cuba - For some reason I find it hard to accept at face value a list that has Cuba this high.

From your link:

“The World Health Organization's ranking of the world's health systems was last produced in 2000, and the WHO no longer produces such a ranking table, because of the complexity of the task.”

The truth about the World Health Organization and AIDS

There have also been reports of the WTO misusing $$$$$$ that was supposed to be used for the Tsunami relief a couple of years ago.
