Sharpton Spanks the Monkey Cartoon

Posted Feb 18th 2009 9:20AM by TMZ Staff

The Reverend Al Sharpton is putting the smack down on the New York Post -- suggesting racism could be a factor in a political cartoon featured in this morning's edition.

The cartoon (by Sean Delonas) comes in the wake of yesterday's national news story about the cop who shot and killed a rampaging chimp in Connecticut. But the controversy in the comic comes from the dialogue between the two officers -- which reads, "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."

Before most of you woke up, Sharpton already fired off a statement saying, "The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."

"Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill?"

Calls to the Post have not been returned.

Dang Al Sharpton engages in racial demagoguery, who would have ever thought something like that?

It is racist, it is offensive, and it's not even funny.

How is it racist or offensive ? And don't tell me because it's a veiled commentary toward Barack Obama. Presidents don't write spending bills. Congress does that. So, please.... enlighten us heathens and explain. If you can.

The problem isn't the publics perception that it's racist, the problem is Al Sharpton's deep down feeling that he is a monkey, therefore he secretly believes all African Americans are monkeys!

The messed up thing here is the Rev will make sure some heads roll over this........ Ridiculous!

guys, don't you know it's only acceptable to call and compare bush to a monkey?

these are the petty "distractions" obama is talking about.

holder doesn't want to talk about the bush monkey.

he wants to talk about how all the whiteys on the weekends have target practice with an obama picture and when that's over, there's a newspaper cartoon contest to see who can make the best monkey picture comparision to obama.

if you utter the phrase double standard, then you should just be warned of hollow rhetoric in your future that only mentions of how "you couldn't be further from the truth" without no reasonable explanation to back it up.

iraq war, do nothing crowd, tax cuts for the wealthy caused the budget deficit and so on.

Now any time someone mentions that it was so simple it seemed a monkey did it, we will hear how the Kenyan Jesus was racially attacked.

I guess all of those careerbuilder.com commercials were referring to the ONE. Like we said earlier, race is now the only issue that will matter as long as the ONE is in office.

Look at the stimulus bill. It damn sure looks like a monkey wrote it.

And for how many years did the media portray GWB as a big eared monkey?

I wrote the following less than 2 months ago on this forum:

"... Btw, it will be very interesting to see how any criticism of the Obama presidency is perceived & reported in the media, especially in light of the criticism that Bush received over his two terms. Bush was often portrayed in cartoons as having monkey-like characteristics. Is that off limits to cartoonists now that the President-elect is of mixed racial heritage? ..."
