Site Update I

RunInRed

Recommended Posts

In an effort to be as open, transparent and inclusive as possible, I wanted to give every one an update on where we are now and where we are heading over the next few months.

The sale of the site was officially completed as planned on 3/01/09. I would like to thank David, Stoic-One and TitanTiger for how generous, cooperative and professional they all were throughout this transition. They are the true definition of a class act and they represent what AUN is all about. May their example continue be our constant reminder of the type of community we are pledging to carry forward.

As many of you have probably noticed, we currently have some Server issues that bring the site to a near crawl when more than 75 or so users log on at the same time. Correcting this problem is priority number one and our IT team has already mobilized around this effort. I should be able to report significant progress in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Addressing our Server issues also provides us with the opportunity to look at our overall Software package, with the objective of improving our overall user experience. To this end, I have already had some great high-level discussions with the Moderating team and I have also received several other messages containing some good ideas for how we should go about this. However, as I've stated previously, we are all stakeholders in AUN's future and I want every one to have an opportunity to provide input.

So please consider this your suggestion box, want list and discussion thread for the future of AUN. What do you currently love about the site that must not change? What current functionalities would you like to see improved? What new features and functionalities would you like to see in the future? The microphone is yours...let's hear your ideas.

I like the format with the message boards, but I wish we had a chat room.

I'll send you a link to one I use to keep in touch with friends in the Upstate of S.C. It's a great tool, but it may require more server space and advanced technology to keep it from crashing down.

I'm pretty sure this forum software has a chat room feature and it was implemented several years ago and nobody used it. After a period of time it was just turned off.

Something I have noticed in other threads that I love is when you hover over the thread topic it gives a little preview of what was written in the first topic. I become much more efficient with what I have to look at because I know what it is talking about.

A little more red and black around the site would be cool with me

I actually like the software this forum uses. A lot of the newer forum software is cool with damn it can get a little TOO complicated using that stuff with all these buttons and stuff everywhere.

Just to clarify, when I say software, I am not necessarily just referring to the forum (although, the boards will always be the heart and sole of AUN). I'm also thinking in broarder terms of what other capabilities/functionality you might like to see on the site.

I like the board just like it is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Oh, we could ban anyone that cheers on teams that beat AU while doing Souljah Boy on the sideline. :poke:

I think Chat would be a good feature to have...even if we only turned it on during games and other special news events.

Thats what I was thinking- just during games. No need having to refresh when commenting on a live game.

Also, how about some kind of RSS reader on the main page that searches the web for Auburn related news and posts links?

I prefer the format of this board. I HATE forums sites like Rivals with their display. So I beg - please keep the general format of this board.

I would recommend adding a "Rumors" forum. This way whenever there is a rumor without a "link," it can just be moved to that forum. When the evidence is substantial, it can be moved to the proper forum.

I agree that the Chat room would probably be a great idea for games, especially football games. I am not sure when the chat room was first initialized, but if it was post 2003 football season (when I joined), I don't believe it was marketed / advertised well because I had never heard of it.

What is everyone's view on having an interactive blog? By interactive, I mean that all registered users would have the ability to have there own "diaries" and place to voice their opinions? On other sites, diaries can be rated and the best ones rise to the top for easy viewing. These could then be linked into the boards for comments, discussions. Thoughts?

I'd like the blog thing. If you don't want to use it, don't. But personally it'd be nice to write an article on one's thoughts without it being a thread that turns into why PC hates Auburn. No one has to read what I write. But if someone wants to see where I am coming from with my ideas to see exactly how I feel - I can direct it to that.

I also like it because after every game, I see 38 separate threads about "what I would do" (with "I" being the person starting the thread). It'd be nice to have the forum stick to news and good conversation. But that's just my opinion.

You'd be the only person that read it. Knock yourself out. :poke:

Red, the only thing I care about is that you keep your socialist, pinko opinions to yourself. B)
