Ladarius Phillips-- could he be the next Fairley?

Aside from the physical skills, Fairley had a meanness about him when the ball was hiked. The desire to impose his will on the other team, the QB, and his ability to do so, is a rare combination.

Don't know much about LP's play on the DL. Seems like if he has the talents, that it'll take some time to develop. A couple of years ?

Either way, I hope we sift through the JUCO players because we really hit the jackpot with JUCO players the past two years. Fairley last year and Cam this year. I'd be fine with getting another first round draft pick out of the JUCO ranks.

We signed Nick at of high school initially. Auburn was on him early.

He played both ways in HS. Rocker sounded pretty high on him a couple of weeks ago. He has Fairley's speed.

As one who watched Phillips play in high school, I'll say again what I've said here before. He's a decent prospect at DT. He was rather dominating at DT in HS ball. He was not an exceptional running back. Opposing coaches spent a little extra time planning to handle L.P. when he was on defense. On offense, he was just another opposing RB that didn't demand any special preparation.

I don't know if he'll be another Fairly or not. Maybe another T.J. Jackson, and that ain't bad. If you want to hope for someone to be another Nick Fairley, Jeff Whitaker looks like the best bet from guys currently on the team.

The next Fairley? Yeah; no. I'm not sure some of you realize how special a talent you are talking about.

My honest opinion is that Phillips is probably a role player at best. He will get lost in the shuffle by more talented defensive linemen as we sign them (eh: Gabe Wright).

Fairley is a very special, rare talent. He has great size and speed with a motor that doesnt stop and a pronounced

mean streak. He imposed his will on opposing lines. Fairley is a once in a longtime athlete.

Phillips may turn out to be a great lineman, but he is no Nick Fairley. I'm not holding out a ton of hope that he materializes into this freak of nature athlete everyone seems to feel he will.

Well, I didn't mean that he'd be on par with Fairley-- I was thinking more about the unusual athleticism for a big man. We have some big run stopping DTs, but none are close to Fairley's quickness and agility.

I would like to see him get some reps at H-Back/Full Back. I would also suspect this could take some pressure off the O-Line.

He could be in the mold of Demarcus Mcneil. Who I thought was very good DT for us. Shorter in height but had a lot of strength and quickness. Like it has been mentioned here he will need to get a meanness and different mind set to play d line in the sec.

LP is the new Deron Furr, everyone seems to be obsessed with this guy even though he never sees the field.

Furr was an upper-tier recruit and a great athlete; hard for him to "see the field" when he wasn't even on the team by the time the season started.

I'm pretty sure that has been his primary position, he is on the Roster as a FB.

I am kinda lost with this thread, has Phillips moved to the line?

He was working with the DL during Bowl practice. This has been the reality from the start...he came in at ~290 pounds and hasn't lost a single pound from the looks of it. Any chance of him ever playing any FB role relied on him losing a ton of weight.

He practiced there a bit lately. Rocker seemed high on him.

I've heard that he is really quick and agile on his feet despite his size, is that accurate? That would be a great quality on the DL, and we've all seen how Rocker has been able to bring these guys along.

Even if he works a lot at DT, I still envision Phillips being a huge factor as a lead blocker, kinda like Eric Smith. (Hopefully without Eric's tendency for personal fouls) Honestly, if Phillips gets a head of steam in front of Dyer or McCalebb, that could be a DEADLY combination, especially in the red zone.

How many personal fouls does Eric have?

Would you have preferred the police throw a yellow flag instead of arresting him?

I do not remember what it was for but he also had one against UGA. There is a history of poor decisions.
