FYI

5-star DE Ray Drew of Thomas Co. Central told me he's tentatively planning to announce on Fri., Jan. 28.

@RecruitingAJC

Previous threads on Drew...

My UGAy buddy thinks he has been a silent commit to GA for a while now. Said him and LeMay are very close and are rumored to be rooming together. I would love it if we can pull him but not getting my hopes up. He would be a HUGE pickup for our Defense.

UGA fans have felt really good about numerous kids that have since committed elsewhere. Drew has been very hard to read; but our coaches feel fairly strong about him. Would it surprise me if he ended up at Georgia? No, but this reminds me of the Corey Lemonier situation from a year ago and I have mentioned that a few times. I still think Drew signs with Auburn.

I would love it if he did. I read an article about how relationships are very important to him. Said Rocker and Chette have great relationships with him but so does Richt. We will just have to wait.

Back in October, the self-proclaimed gurus on AJC had every prospect in Georgia over a 3-star fighting for one of the treasured spots on Richt's "dream team". Slowly, the dream team ship is sinking and the outlook over there ain't so hot. They are now reduced to offering a 2-star DB team mate of Crowell's in hopes of getting Crowell on board.

They will continue to proclaim that every uncommitted player worth having is a silent commit to UGA until they are forced to accept reality on signing day.

Looks like he may be coming here - he's a preacher???

"Highly touted defensive end Ray Drew is scheduled to make an official visit to Clemson this weekend, his last one.

But the Georgia blue-chipper's decision on a college destination may already be narrowed to two schools.

"It depends on the day, but if I had to get it down to two, it would be Auburn and Georgia," said Thomas County coach Bill Shaver.

"Ray's big on relationships. Football is not as important as the relationships he has made."

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Drew is a versatile athlete who leads the basketball team in scoring and finished top three in the shot put and discus as a junior.

But his performance at the U.S. Army All-American Game - "he was pretty much unblockable," Shaver pointed out - has his stock rising fast.

ESPN.com ranks him the nation's No. 3 prospect, Rivals.com lists him 28th and Scout.com just elevated him to No. 33.

Shaver said he believes Drew could make a decision as early as next week, and it will come down to relationships.

"He's very close to (Auburn defensive line coach) Tracy Rocker and the chaplain (Chette Williams)," Shaver said. "And he's very close to Coach (Mark) Richt at Georgia.

"Ray's an ordained minister and that connection is important to him.""

Looks like Chette may earn his pay as recruiter on this one.

Sure you want to word it exactly like that? :rolleyes:

I agree that if Ray is, or wants to be, a minister then the Chette Williams connection could be big.

But only coaches may recruit, and Rev. Chette is a chaplain, not a coach. ...it also sort of feeds the "Rev. Chette as money-handler for Lowder & boosters" fantasy that our naysayers want to perpetrate.

Maybe he can help Richt load the moving van in a year or two... :rolleyes::big:

Yes I know chette can't recruit and wasn't being serious but its amazing what influence chette and yox have when meeting players.

I agree--those two guys are a BIG part of the AU success story that rarely get the national attention they deserve.

Ray Drew will have in home visit from Mark Richt today.He decides next Friday on a school.

@Mansell247sport

I wonder when Chiz will come-a-calling to the Drew residence then...

Much later than today, and a head coach may make only one in-home visit so Richt will have shot his wad. Quoting something that Tommy Tuberville said about recruiting back around 2003. "There's nobody I'd rather have in a recruits' living room on the last day than Gene Chizik."

I'd expect Chizik and Rocker to go calling on the Drew household at some point next week or weekend, but before the 30th. I believe the 30th is the last day for contact, from Sunday evening until signing day Wednesday, Feb. 2nd is a "no contact" period, if memory serves. If Drew is serious about announcing on the 28th, obviously we'll schedule in earlier.

I saw that too. Doesn't make me feel any better though; these kids are masters of getting hopes up these days.
