Spotlighting Emory Blake - Oregon

Auburn needed a third receiver to step up this past season and Emory Blake was there to be the man. He was tied with Terrell Zachery as the second most target receiver on the Auburn roster with 54 pass attempts thrown in his direction. He responded with 33 receptions for 554-yards and led the team with 8 touchdown receptions. One of his touchdown receptions came against the Oregon Ducks in the BCS Championship Game.

The play…

On this play, Emory Blake is initially line up as the slot-WR to the right of the formation. Just before the snap, Blake motions to the left of the formation, which now forces Oregon to cover Blake with a LB-DE. At the snap, Blake appears to be running an out to the sideline but it will actually be an “out & up”. The LB covering Blake, looks back into the backfield at Cameron Newton, which allows Blake to break into the vertical route.

Darvin Adams, who is lined up on the same side as Blake, runs a deep crossing route, which clears the sideline route for Emory Blake. Cameron Newton completes the pass to Blake, resulting in a 30-yard touchdown pass. It was his 8th touchdown reception of the season and his 5th covering 20-yards or more.

With the departure of Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery, Emory Blake could be the primary receiver next season in terms of receptions. He will be the most experienced and proven receiver returning for 2011. During the 2010 season, Blake’s 33 receptions were responsible for 13 plays of 15-yards or more and 8 plays of 25-yards or more. Of his 33 receptions, 18 went for a first down or touchdown. He caught the longest pass in school history, when he scored on a 94-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Newton against Louisiana-Monroe.
