Vanderbilt pulls offer from 3* QB

It's not the pulling of the offer that I disagree with here, even though it makes no sense. Check out this article in our local paper today. This kid quit visiting other schools, went on an official visit and woke up sunday morning while on his official visit and was told he no longer had an offer. I think its a horrible way for Vanderbilt to handle this situation. Why have him in for an official if you are going to yank is offer?? Kind of bush league to me. BTW, this kid is pretty good. He doesn't have the size that most major programs would prefer at the position, but he throws a really nice ball. I officiated several of his games during his high school career and he can throw the ball extremely well.

Deal breaker for Catholic QB White

White's Vanderbilt offer falls through ahead of National Signing Day, Feb. 2

The Pensacola area's biggest National Signing Day in recent memory won't come without some hiccups.

Tough decisions, vanishing scholarship offers and de-commitments are all part of the build up towards Feb. 2, the first day football players can sign national letters of intent with universities around the country.

Take Catholic quarterback Shaun White, who is back on the market after his scholarship offer to Vanderbilt fell through over the weekend. Before that, White was one of 11 area players committed to Division I-A programs.

"We're back to looking," Catholic High coach Greg Seibert said. "He's got several options open. We'll see what this weekend brings."

White committed to the Southeastern Conference program in November, just a week before Vanderbilt head coach Robbie Caldwell was let go following a 2-9 campaign. New coach James Franklin continued to show interest in White, making a visit to Panama City to watch one of his basketball games earlier this month.

Vandy then hosted White on an official visit this past weekend, which ended with Franklin telling White he wouldn't have an offer anymore.

"I just look at it as a blessing. I didn't think it was anyone's fault but mine," said White, who was told the decision was based on academics, despite the fact that White is already a full NCAA Division I-A qualifier. "I knew Vandy was a much harder school to get into."

White said that Vanderbilt gave him the option of going to one year of prep school and signing with the Class of 2012, but the two-time News Journal All-Area first-team selection is not interested in that route.

"On Friday and Saturday (of the official visit), we had a good time," said White, who was 140-of-230 passing for 2,084 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. "They were telling me about the future and how I would fit into that. Then on Sunday, I got a wake-up call at 8:30 a.m. and they said that they weren't too comfortable with my (academic) background."

Just two weeks earlier, Seibert said that Vanderbilt coaches asked White not to take any other official visits, and if he did, they would "consider that a de-commitment." White, a three-star quarterback according to Rivals.com, had stayed loyal to Vanderbilt, not taking any other visits.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like the ugly side of recruiting. There no implication that the offer was pulled because Vandy got someone else to replace him. They pulled his offer because the academic background check didn't indicate he would get in (or maybe it just implied that he would struggle while there... I don't know). Seems like the kid understands that his grades were just not good enough.

My issue with this is that they brought him in for an official visit only to tell him his offer was pulled. It seems to me they could have told him prior to him actually doing an official visit.

I agree 100% with this part - but if he wasn't going to get in due to academics he wasn't going to get in, so that's fine. Vandy does hold their athletes admissions requirements to a higher standard, for all we know he goofed off all semester and while he perhaps passed, they weren't stellar.

It would've been nice if they called a couple other schools on his behalf. That would've been the honorable thing to do, instead of wasting his visit.

Except

Just two weeks earlier, Seibert said that Vanderbilt coaches asked White not to take any other official visits, and if he did, they would "consider that a de-commitment."

I would think they knew of those "academic issues" two weeks ago.

But there's nothing to indicate that except a guess. Maybe part of the official visit at Vandy is an academic consultation. I don't know. It just seems like the kid would be a little more... irritated (or something) if he was really done dirty.

kinda wrong to tell the kid not to make offical visits, bring im in, talk about the future, and then pull his scholorship. I would think if a school told me not make anymore offical visits, it was a done deal. Little on the shady side.

Vandy is already a dead zone. They dont need to do anything to dissuade other kids from going there.

I feel discrimination played a huge part in this. They pulled his offer because he was a WHITE!
