Mysterious. I'm guessing some form of stomach virus...

The University of Iowa says 12 of its football players were admitted to University of Iowa Hospitals Monday night.

A release sent out Tuesday did not detail the cause of the hospitalization, but did say the athletes are recovering.

A UIHC staff physician says, "All of the individuals are responding well to treatment as of Tuesday morning. All are in safe and stable condition. At this time we are not sure when any of the individuals will be discharged. Hospital discharge will be on a case by case basis."

The university says it will not release the identity of the athletes hospitalized or their conditions.

I heard this on the radio. They said the name of the illness and I couldn't even begin to remember to pronounce it. But I do remember they said it was a cause of excessive work outs/exercising

Rhabdomyolysis. Its a generic term for muscle breakdown and signnaled by elevated muscle enzymes on blood tests or muscle enzymes in the urine. It can be the result of excessive exercise and frequently seen in the summer workouts with heat exhaustion. It could also be due to a supplement or drug the players are taking, or a combination. It takes a pretty insane workout to put 12 elite athletes in the hospital. Someone's head will roll over this.

Of course ESPN has to get its jabs in. From link above:

You won't find many coaches with a better reputation than Ferentz among his peers and among his fans. He has been both wildly successful and wildly popular in Iowa City, compiling an 89-60 record at a school that shouldn't be able to win consistently at the highest level. The reward has been a contract extended last year through 2020 and paying him well in excess of $3 million a year.

Yet when it was time to face the public Wednesday at a news conference to explain what happened to 13 of his players, Ferentz was a no-show. So was Barta. Instead, Iowa pathetically trotted out its director of football operations, Paul Federici, a guy certainly not paid to be the face of the program in times of crisis.

That's leadership, all right. That's compassion. That's accountability.

Even if Ferentz is absolved of any responsibility in this matter, his absence and silence during a troubling week at Iowa should tell recruits and their families plenty about how much he cares for his players.

Looks like something else is going on here and I am sure we will never know what. I can't believe that all of them suffered from this because of a workout, also if that is the case what about the rest of the team.

Not going to speculate but wanted to provide new info.
