If Cyrus says no, wouldn't/shouldn't AU coaches have a backup plan. Yeah, it might not be ideal, but wouldn't there be some judo guy or someone trying to walk-on or something we might have a spot for?

I think they would be fine to leave it at 24. Shon Coleman will be taking a spot next year(hopefully) and we've got such a small sr class this upcoming year that we're going to have to be very selective for next years class. As of right now, we've only got 10 scholarship guys that will be sr's next year going by this roster - http://auburntigers.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/aub-m-footbl-mtt.html

Carr, Thorpe, Cole, Freeman, McNeil, Smith, Mosley, Greene, Cooper, Winter

There are some questions about some guys standing with the team - Curry - and Jawara White's neck, so those could be two more that don't make it, but either way, it's gonna be a thin recruiting class, #'s wise, next year I think.

There's nothing magic about signing 25. Each of the past two years we've signed 27 and if Cyrus and Calloway hadn't been slowed or stopped by parents and had Fanning signed with AU instead of bammer we'd have signed 27 yesterday. There will probably be a player or two of the 24 not make grades, sign with a pro baseball team or otherwise not enroll in school for fall term, so there's likely more than one slot available. The coaches would know who and how many are in jeopardy.

That having been said, most of the guys we may have had on the line as backup plans likely signed with some smaller school yesterday. Remember, last year T. Fairyaky(sp?) and L. Phillips were headed for Georgia Southern had Auburn not called them signing day morning. I suspect that by the time yesterday unfolded all such guys were already signed up. Certainly, no legitimate D-1 prospect is left out there today.

Probably the best use that can be made of the vacancy or two that exist is to hold off and give it to some JUCO or early HS graduate next January. That's how Sanders, Curry, Cam Newton & co. were able to be counted back on '09. Similarly the few extra '11 slots will be available in January of '12.

King of what I was thinking, if we have vacancies. We did great with Dec/Jan signees last year. Plus, someone said the state was expected to be deep in HS talent this fall...might be some hot rising senior that would be ready to enroll in January 2012 and not count against our 25 that Feb.

I think they could also offer it to a Senior walk-on. Or does the NCAA have a rule against that too.

No. They gave 3 walkons the extra 3 scholarships last year.

Senior walkons do not count against the 25 limit, so the only one they figure into is the overall 85. We won't be close to that.
