Vitamins

I am 33 yrs old, which may sound young but my body feels the pains daily. My occupation is working outside in an oil refinery. I have a physical job, but working shift work doesn't help your health either. My question is that I have started Taking

1 Daily Multi vitamin

2 Citracal for 100% of Calcium and 40% of my Vit D

1 Vit C 100%

2 Fish Oil for 100%

Since I started Taking these my body acutally has been being feeling better, maybe its a psychological thing. I do execercise 2-3 times a week and I eat mostly good stuff, but I do sneak in Buffalo Wings and Pizza in there. I don't drink milk or eat Ice cream so my only vitamin D comes from the Sun and cheese. I am thinking of adding another Vit D to reach the 100% Daily Dose. Is there any other Vitamins that you use that you could think might benefit me.

Make sure you look at the ingredients in the daily multivitamin and makes you're not taking twice what you need, especially with the calcium and Vitamin D, you can reach toxic levels with those, and it can contribute to kidney stones and many other things! I wouldn't take more than 2500 mg of calcium and 4000IU of Vitamin D.

Some people think the more the better with over the counter stuff, but that is not the case! Let me know if you have any other questions for a pharmacy student! :)

Stretching is a good thing too if you don't do much of that. My back would be in rough shape if I hadn't found some really good stretches for it. The jury is really out in a lot of ways with vitamins. Many doctors will reccomend a daily multi-vitamin but many are leery of using a lot of supplements. Food is by far the best way to get nutrients and many or maybe most otc supplements may not be absorbed well or at all by the body.

Here's a link for a readers digest type article about a study that found that people who take anti-oxidants are 16% more likely die than those who don't. It is a JAMA study. It provides opposing viewpoints that disagree with the study as well and cites a study that showed that taking vitamin c pills are useless in fighting or preventing colds among many other things.

Vitamin article

The thing I always wonder about vitamins and medicines is, how do they get the right amount of the stuff you're buying in each pill? If you've ever been in a factory that produces things in quantity it might make you wonder too. The article cited above talks about how 21 vitamins were studied and some had much less of what they were supposed to have in them than they did and some had 3 times as much in them as they were supposed to. Alot of our pill making has been outsourced to china and costa rica and other places.

Make sure the multi vitamins you're taking actually are breaking down and being absorbed by your body.

Not all are vitamins are the same.

Fish oil is a real good idea.

Also, be sure to hydrate with plenty of water.

If you're concerned with vitamin D, add fish and eggs into your diet. Salmon, tuna and catfish are all pretty good sources.

Diet is the way to go, however. I am younger than you but had started to feel the wear and tear I've put on my body. I went largely paleo with my diet and feel worlds better. Paleo, in summary, is essentially anything that can be caught, killed, harvested, etc. Try to stay away from processed stuff, bread, etc. I promise you will feel worlds better. Even if you're not "strict", you'll feel the benefit.

To answer your question, I think a vitamin D supplement with your multi should cover it, although please check percentages as outlined above. You really don't need much else that I can think of.

Two very simple suggestions: drink PLENTY of water and drink a cup or two of green or white tea--not the Lipton crap.

I checked out a book today from the library on herbals, vitamins and such. It goes in detail of the percentages and benefits and bad things it can do. The citrical along with the daily vitamin, according to the charts is plenty of Vitamin D. The regiment I am taking now I think is pretty fined tuned. I don't want to be a pill taker later on in life, so a healthy lifestyle is a good investment. I need to add more fish into my diet but I have never liked fish that comes out of a can or pouch. Eggs in a nogo, the only way I eat them are in a cake mix.

I'm no doctor, but I've read about too much calcium and the health risks. However I've also read that we severely underestimate the amount of vitamin D that we require.

my current intake of Vit D is 1500 IU with 600 being rec intake with 4000 being threshold

Calcium 500 mg with recommended 800. I feel that I am under the safe threshold on the Calcium. I may be overeaching on the Vit D.

Whenever I'm feeling tired I throw in a B12 or Zinc vitamin. Seems to help from the normal Multi, and occasional C.

Pre and Pro Biotics are a good idea too. Digestive health is where it all begins! Get that tract cleaned out and working properly will make you feel worlds better, plus will HUGELY boost your immune system. I also take Cinnamon for a multitude of reasons, and swear I can feel it! Here is a link for all you folks that may be curious. Cinnamon (and not your favorite dancer!)
