Trent Dilfer: "That was phenomenal. If scouts saw this they'd have been slobbering."

Bruce Feldman (ESPN): "Cam Newton session is done. Wow."

Dan Wetzel (Yahoo! Sports): "No surprise Newton killed it. The Vince Young, JaMarcus comparisons were stereotyping. Cam can be great, better arm than Tebow."

Great to see him doing well but I have a better arm than Tebow so that isn't saying much.

The media guys' opinions probably don't mean a lot to NFL teams, but Trent Dilfer is someone a lot of people respect when it comes to breaking down how the QB position is played. If he is impressed, then it carries a lot of weight.

I disagree. Tebow has a strong arm. He just has bad mechanics, namely the long windup he takes.

Former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton impressive in workout in San Diego

By Charles Goldberg

Cam Newton's workout for the media in San Diego today was apparently a smashing success.

The former Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner received plenty of accolades after his first staged performance since he helped Auburn to the BCS national championship on Jan. 10.

"He was incredibly impressive," said ESPN analyst and former pro quarterback Trent Dilfer during a network telecast.

Dilfer said Newton should be a Top 5 pick in April's NFL draft.

NFL scouts couldn't attend the workout, by rule, but selected media members checked out Newton. His personal quarterback coach, George Whitfield Jr., said there hasn't been a decision whether Newton will throw at the NFL Combine.

Maybe he should.

"It was really one of the most phenomenal personal workouts I have ever seen," said Dilfer, who played in the NFL for 13 seasons.

"It reinforced everything I had seen on film studying to him this point, but it's even more staggering to see him in person. This is a tremendous physical specimen. He's a dynamic athlete and a beautiful thrower. The thing that took our breath away, you see it on film he's a good thrower, but to see him in person he is so compact. His mechanics are so sound. The ball just jumps off of his hand."

Dilfer said Newton was impressive with this throws.

"He cut the ball through the wind," Dilfer said.

Newton has been working with Whitfield for two weeks. He'll remain with him for weeks more as Newton works on his footwork on the field, and reading NFL defenses on film.

"It sounds like his mentality is he just doesn't want to me a playmaker, he wants to be a surgeon. That's really what you need to be to be a successful NFL quarterback," Dilfer said.

Newton gave a modest assessment of his workout.

"I felt like I had to come out here and get better. As a whole, one of the things George and I had been working on since I stepped in San Diego is me being on balance, me finishing my throws. Of course, me coming out of a spread offense, there was a concern about me coming from under center, and being fluid."

He had plenty that could be improved, but it was all minor tweaks. From everything I've heard, he's got a great work ethic. Bottom line, he's physically superior to every QB in the NFL right now. He's smart. He works hard, and he's a natural born leader. Those are the broad strokes; the devil is always in the small details. If he gets the small stuff down, there is literally no limit to the damage he can do in the NFL. Dilfer is right about one thing: comparing him to VY or Tebow is just lazy. Those guys are nothing like him, and he's nothing like them. Totally different skill set and approach.

Fine, I can throw the ball better than Tebow, happy now. He has gotten a ton of guidance and with his will he will succeed in the NFL I am sure of it but that doesn't mean he is a great NFL QB

"I felt like I had to come out here and get better."
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.

Keep that attitude, Cam, and you'll be just fine.

Wes Bunting weighs in:

What I liked…

• For a guy his size there is some natural flexibility to his game. He looks comfortable sitting into his stance from under center, can fluidly open up his hips and generate good torque from his core when snapping off a throw.

...

What I didn’t like…

• He still gets too narrow based and upright at times when he has time to stride toward his target. Doesn’t generate as much torque as he could from his lower half and gets caught at times throwing from the waist up and not bending enough at the knees.

...

I heard the quote afterward that there are only a certain number of athletes in the world that can throw a football like Newton, and I agree with that. But again that doesn’t mean the guy’s going to be a good starting quarterback in the NFL. The determining factor for Newton in my view still doesn’t have anything to do with his abilities on the field — as we know he possesses all the athletic tools to be as good as he wants — but everything to do with the way he’s going to carry/handle himself off the field in preparation for Sunday that will be the key.

Based off of last season, this won't be much of a problem. I don't see him getting a big head now since he's basically starting over. He'll continue to put in the work and be the leader he has been in the past.

Kiper now has Cam as the No. 1 QB off the board.

The thing he needs to realize is that Washington is a blackhole. He's additioning for the opportunity to avoid that dumpster fire of an organization. If he can impress the right person, he'll end up in Carolina, Buffalo, or Arizona... all of those are better destinations than Washington. If I were laying odds on the number one pick, I'd say Fairley has a 45% chance, Bowers has a 30% chance, Newton has a 10% chance, and Gabbert has a 5% chance.

Wow, you must be really good. I think Tebow does throw the ball pretty good, and you're better than that?!

I even liked the part where, in the middle of his interview, he bumped into someone off camera or they bumped into him, and he stopped to say "I'm sorry..". I don't care what his critics say, he's a man of character, humility, and compassion!
