  1. 1. is it time to give the rivalry a break?

Ok it’s obvious that the rivalry has gotten out of hand. I have been thinking about this for quite some time. And now that Toomer’s trees have been poisoned should we take a break from this rivalry? I have always felt like Auburn should be in the eastern division of the SEC so we could play Florida every year. Perhaps now is the time for that move. I always dreamed of the day that we could play bama twice in one year and beat them twice. But now I’m just sick of some of their fans and would rather not have anything to do with them at all. It’s starting to get ugly and the mud slinging is only going to get worse. Move to the east now play LSU from the west every year for a while and if we meet bama in the SEC championship game so be it. This might be good For Auburn. I think that recruits would jump at a chance to play Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Lsu every year. Leave Bama in a less exciting league and the recruits will leave too. I realize that this may all sound crazy and perhaps I’m just pissed off right now. But quite frankly I’m sick of the bama nation and would much rather play Florida every year anyway.

You can't just stop a rivalry... It'll always be there in emotion.

True but we can leave them with an inferior west league that recruits will not want to play in.

I believe the fact that both teams are having so much success on the field right now has taken the intensity of the rivalry to new levels. This means new levels of fans lashing out at each other. I mean the kind of fans like "AL for Dadeville" who let this consume their life. If this state had something else people cared about; crap like this would not have as much of a chance of happening because the obsessions would not be so drastic.

This guy sounds like your typical state of Alabama resident. Because he is the typical resident from this state he does not have a high quality of life. Since he probably doesn't have a good job, a good community to live in, or anything else to give him a reason to get out bed in the morning, he turns to Alabama football. This dictates his decisions. People like this don't make this a rivalry. They make it a burden. Both sides have this type of fan and because of the situation of this state they will not go away, ever. I know I can come off sounding like an elitist saying this so if I piss anyone off I apologize. But this is a prime example of why I hate living in the state of Alabama.

We were smart enough to stop it and not play the heathens once before. Then the Alabama Legislature said we had to start again. This time, tell the politicians to take a hike. Bammers on this site are on my ignore list. Ignoring the ignorant is a good thing. I hate Bama and their fans.... all of them.

Couldn't have said it better. I live in Atlanta now but, have been seriously considering moving the family back to Auburn. The only thing that really makes me think twice about it is living in Alabama. Why can't Auburn be a state unto itself?

I think if it were ever put to a real vote of the alumni, Auburn alumni would vote to quit playing them by a wide margin. They (the bammers) take all the joy out of the game. We don't have nasty rivalries with the other teams that we play on a regular basis.

I disagree so much with "this guy sounds like your typical state of Alabama resident". I am an Auburn fan, and I am proud to be a state of Alabama resident. I did not turn to Alabama football. Yes, you did p*** me off. I am glad your're not here forever.

I voted "no" on getting rid of the rivalry. I don't really think it will get better and I'm afraid stopping it would just make things worse.

It's a little more caustic this year, from the bammers, due to this year's: MNC, embarrassing IB loss and the AU domination over UAt the past 28 years. Northport has a little diaper rash...

You don't let them make us quit. You use it as motivation to go out and stomp a mudhole in their asses in everything.

Spot on!

Agreed. Don't let some "Lord of the Trailer Park" ruin a great rivalry game. Although the internet sure brings out the nut jobs, I enjoy the IB rivalry quite a bit.

Uhhh .... no. Your sweeping generalization is just not factual. Both sides do NOT have this same type of fan -- and this incident illustrates that in spades. I have no doubt that there are some bammie fans out there that are as disgusted with this as we AU fans are -- emphasis on the word "some."

You must not know many alumni.

We do not need to stop the rivalry. But this year has been more intense than I can ever remeber. At our school in the fall everyday there was auburn bama arguments.

Can anyone (on either side) honestly say that they enjoy the rivalry? Every year, I dread the game, I don't enjoy watching it, I'm down if we lose and if we win, I'm more relieved than I am joyful. There's just nothing pleasant about it.

Emotions are high right now for good reason, but I don't want to end it! NEVER! They escaped us for years and I am more than happy pay them back every chance we get!

This is a good point. Seems like all the game does is breed hatred. I literally find myself hating people I don't know because of college football, which is ridiculous.

I am undecided. My first reaction, was "of course we should not have a break", but the more I think about it, maybe it would be for the best. People just make it too important. Like HSVTiger and AwesomeDave, it sometimes seems to me that it is just something to worry about losing more than enjoy winning and it makes me dislike people I don't know.

I personally enjoy the Georgia and LSU rivalries far more than the Iron Bowl. With UGA and LSU things are intense, but mostly fun. If we lose I feel bad, but I don't dread it, and winning is a ton of fun. When I meet Georgia and LSU fans/alums I interact with them and may give them a hard time, but there is no hate involved.

I think that at the very least we need to de-emphasize the Iron Bowl. I dislike it when I come on here and one out of three threads is about Bama. We (as supporters of Auburn University) should focus more on being positive and supporting Auburn and less on trying to belittle Alabama. Many Alabama fans spend way too much energy criticizing Auburn instead of supporting Alabama, and they should likewise try to just give it a rest sometimes.

I don't think they should stop the rivalry but I do think they should do something to temper the rivalry.

I think if anything I'd like to see them move the Iron Bowl to the middle of the season. Instead of playing Alabama in late November as the last game of the season, we should play them like the 2nd week of October or mid-October. Kinda like the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma.

That's what I wouldn't mind seeing. Or at least rotate it every 2 years between late November and mid-October.
