Excerpts:

Pat Dye's Liver says, "never done any real charity work before so I am going to need some help to get this thing started."

PDL fan says, "We should have an artist carve tiny statues of the dude from the dead wood of the toomer's trees, and sell them for his defense fund. It would make a fortune. The carvings can have the guy wearing an ALL IN T-shirt with a Bama script A on it."

Isufball 19 says, "I think people are making way too big a deal out of this. How old is that tree in the first place? If it's one of those 300 year old live oak trees, it's not like it has a long shelf life from this point as it is. Also, unless the guy makes a real confession and not just on a call-in radio show, how much evidence do they have to show that he actually did. Spare my ignorance, as I haven't read a whole lot about the story, but it just seems like it's being blown way out of proportion. Someone told me the guy is facing felony charges and could face serious prison time? Is he being charged with destruction of a historical landmark or something? There were a couple kids in my high school that chopped down a big ass oak tree on campus as a senior prank. They were arrested for it, but I think all that came out of it was a fine and probation. I understand doing this at a college is much more serious, but 5+ years of jail time for poisoning a tree, c'mon. Just find another live oak tree and have it transported to Tumor's Corner and be done with it."

Driver says, "You are aware that a 'new oak tree" is actually just a f***ing acorn ? I can send you thousands next fall if you like............"

To be fair, a few - a very few refuse to defend the idiot.

This is who they are.

The man never graduated or even attended UAT, but they're all too happy to defend what he did.

Don't lump us all into that catagory. I don't agree that most Alabama fans want to defend this guy. That is just not true. The majority that I know and have talked with here in Tuscaloosa are ashamed and sad that this has happened and hope the guy goes to jail for a long time. He's a sick person and he shouldn't be free to do something like this again.

I wouldn't want to take up money for his defense, but I wish that for our A game that each fan would donate money, if even just $1, and send that money to Auburn to help with the restoration. We usually have a large crowd that day, so it could result in a good bit of money. This money wouldn't be from the University(unless they'd match) but from the fans to try and show Auburn fans that we do care about what happened and that we hate that someone that says he's one of ours could have done such a thing. Just because some people haven't commented is not because they don't care, it's just because we just don't know what to say at a time like this. It's like a death, we want to help, but right now words just can't help, but that doesn't mean that we condone what has been done.

Bama My Heart, we know that most (well, we have hope lol) Alabama fans would reject this idiot and his "display" of love for the Crimson Tide. His childish act will come with heavy prosecution.

However, it's way to early and way to emotional for us all and only time and patience will heal this wound. The best thing that can happen is for the trees to survive.

Have you read your message boards? Man do you folks have some class. You know what they say, you just can't fix stupid.

( You saying it has no impact on what I've seen , the things I've heard others say. Sorry, but your claim that MOST bama fans are upset, hurt, or what ever? I call BS. The only thing bama fans are upset at is the potential of their bear statue being dowsed with acid, or cut down at the ankles w/ a blow torch. Which, btw, would be stupid, as y'all could just prop up another statue in no time, and there'd be not trace of anything ever happened. )

Oh, folks have commented plenty on this, and by far, the vast majority of bama fans have made it be perfectly clear that they approve of the act and are all too quick to make jokes at our expense. It's easy to come out and say this guy is a dirt bag, a mental case, and never even attended the school. But most ignore that, want to pay for his defense, and buy t-shirts and such. Here or there, there may be a fan who has an ounce of decency and common sense, but the rest of you degenerate moron fan base is drowning you out. And don't get mad at me for calling it like it is, it's YOUR people who are doing all this stuff. It's beyond pointless to even deny it.

Let's see the turn out at BDS if it's announced well in advance that 100% of the proceeds are going to restore Toomer's corner. Sounds like a fair gesture, but my guess is, you'd see the lowest turn out for y'alls A-Day in decades. I'd love to be wrong on that.

Like it or not he will be the face of Bama for years to come.

I don't think that most bama fans are on this dipshits bandwagon. God I can only hope not. My dad is a bammer, and he said it made him sick at his stomach and very sad. Yesterday I was eating at a steak house and a bammer approached me (I had my NC hat on) just to appologize and let me know that they thought it was dispicable. That meant a whole lot to me, I can assure you. Now, on the other side of that, you have these idiots on message boards and al.com that get together like a pack of wild hogs and talk all this bullsnizzle redneckery. Those are the ignorant, uneducated fans that bama has (and unfortunatly Auburn too) that are saying these pitiful things. Bama my heart, why dont YOU start that fund at the bama A day game? I bet you could get some student organizations and the University on board pretty easily. That really would be a nice jesture.

the only thing ive seen other that these 2 bama fans are my two bama fan roommates saying things about it being stupid and ignorant etc. I ate at HSV's mamma G's and sure enough some spuat fans sit at a table right next to me and talk as if he did nothing wrong and there should be a holiday. I'm darn sure sick of hearing people say its not a big deal its just a tree get over it etc etc What they dont understand is the fact that we cant plant ANYTHING there for a good few years. Not only that but it spreads so that whole park could be screwed. My head wanted to punch em in the face but my heart and class wont let me. My momma raised me to be a better man than that and that goes with being a tiger....

Hang in there..we all feel that same way. Everyone wants to beech about the economy right now and no one is realizing it will be tax and federal dollars that have to fix this problem. The heck with them. I attended Auburn for a very short time and Auburn has a very special spot in my heart but even more than that I am a tax payer and it really bits that all the frnk attorneys at AL cannot open their eyes and see the economic impact this will have as well as the impact of the property itself.

You should have commented that tips must be up on his pizza delivery job since he could afford to eat at Mamma G's.

Sorry but we don't want any bama money helping with anything. But if you want to really find out the truth do this.....have one side donate to Harvey's defense fund and the other side to helping out Auburn with the restoration. Let us know which side collects the most money :poke:

I've been thinking the same thing for several days.

Don't want their money. Don't want their influence. Don't need their input or opinions.

Any money given by them would be simply for a little positive PR.

You must be basing your opinion of Bama fans on those who troll message boards. I assure you, while a large number of message board posters support this tree assASSin, they are a minority of Bama fans. But they also prove that Updyke was not a lone idiot. BTW, I guarantee you most of his defenders never graduated from or attended UAT either.

Bama My Heart, your sentiments are appreciated. If you and the UA fan base took up a collection and made a donation, it would be a meaningful gesture and would be gratefully accepted by most in the AU family.

I think you better check with the rest of the AU Family before you speak for them. I for one don't agree and it looks to me like others in this thread don't agree either. Maybe you should put up a poll and find out.

Not just a large number, but a large % of bammer fans feel like that. I've sat and listened to bammer folks speak openly about Auburn, not knowing I was an AU grad, and what they say fits right in line with what's been said on the message boards, and what I've heard on the radio ( Atl market, not B'ham )

Until I'm shown otherwise, my view of bama fans in general will remain. Sure, I'm not denying that the light of intelligence and human decency can be found in a very small minority of bama fans, but by in large, the entire concept of what it means to BE a bama fan will always attract the very worst in humanity.

I have contacted the University today and made the suggestion, and was told that they would look into it to see if this can be done, and the impression that I was given is that they will contact someone at Auburn to see how this would be received. I even explained to them that we shouldn't try to make this about us at all, but that we want to extend the olive branch, and to put our money where our mouth is for once. I explained my feelings about this, and how I wanted it to be donated on that day, because it would come from the fans. On reading several posts on this board though, I think ya'll would consider it a slap in the face and not something that you would want us to do. To me that is all that we can do. We can't undo what someone has done. He is not a representative of the University of Alabama so really they are not responsible for anything that he did. I feel like because he claims to be an Alabama fan that the rest of us fans should do something. Honestly we're not trying to make it worse.

I think you are sincere but I honestly think the best thing UA can do right now is leave it alone. The Auburn PTB will do what is neccessary and Auburn fans will gladly cover any costs AU needs from them. To be brutally honest, any effort on the part of UA right now to donate funds comes across to me as saying we want to help the poor little school up the road.

Lets see. When he goes to trial, he'll likely have a defense lawyer who is a Bammer grad; the prosecuting atty. will likely be a Bammer grad; and the judge will be a Bammer grad. What is the defense fund for? . .. Buying linebackers?

PT,

I don't know about that. I do know the last time donations were taken at uat's spring game for another tragedy (the tornado victims at Enterprise HS,) the total collected was really puny -- something like an average of $0.41/person of all that attended. It would be interesting to see if the bammie faithful could surpass donating $0.41 for a non-fatality tragedy such as the Toomer's tree poisonings. ... I have my doubts about the sincerity of these uat fans when it comes to donating money for causes.
