If the Trees die?

  1. 1. "A" replace with Baby Toomer's or young Toomer's? Or "B" replace with full grown live Oaks not related to the Toomer Oaks?

Ok I'm just trying to get a feel for what The Auburn Family would want. I'm still holding out hope that they can save the trees but if the Trees die, which would you, prefer from the above poll. I for one would want whatever is planted back to be from the Toomer's trees already there. I would think that someone has a Toomer's live oak that should be at least 10 years old by now. In 10 more it would be a decent size live oak as long as another UPdyke does not come along. Plant the small trees, descendents of Toomer's oaks and we can water them every time we beat the hell out of BAMA.

Oh and I forgot Carve a Eagle out of the trees if they die and put them at the tunnel entrance for the football players to touch as they come out on the field against bama every other year. We can start a new Auburn tradition out of an old Auburn tradition.

My vote is to replace them with "baby" Toomer trees but it's a mixed bag. Rolling the new small trees would hardly a big deal. But for awhile there are lots of other trees and large shrubs nearby that already get rolled and that will continue. But the bottomline, as has been pointed out by many others, is that there were celbrations of the Auburn spirit at Toomer's Corner before the trees got to be major participants. So I also go with planting the young 'uns of our big Toomer oaks.

Or leave there for every home game, not just the Iron Bowl.

I've talked some with a Forestry expert there that has been involved with that task force. They pretty much know they are going to die. the soil will have to be cleaned if possible, this herbicide is made to kill easily and keep things from growing back for 3 to 5 years. If new trees are planted, you are talking about at least a generation of small trees.

The Austin Treaty lived from a LESS harsh poison but it's not even a quarter of the tree it once was. It was a very hearty tree also, it was 500 years old. A casino in MS has brought in grown trees, they survived Katrina and those trees were about 25 years old and really not that big. Bringing in 25 year old trees or older will be a major expense. Here is what they said about bringing in grown trees and a picture of one. Notice how small a 25 year old oak really is....

Bring in new trees. We'll come to love them just as well. Or transplant trees from another part of campus to those spots. I want my kids to enjoy rolling Toomer's Corner. Given that they're 6 and 7 years old, they'd be senior citizens before rolling them would be the same waiting on "baby Toomer's" trees.

Neither. Replace them with statues that are exact replicas of the trees in all their glory.

Great thought but is that even possible? What would something like that cost?

I made the comment when the story broke that the trees need to be removed and built into a trophy case for the crystal ball. In the place of the trees, metal replicas need to be made so we can roll em all we want to and the clean up won't be that bad.

The Auburn spirit is alive and well, and will always grow.

So it should be for our trees at Toomers.

I voted for baby Toomer's trees, but now that I think about it, there are two trees now, so maybe we could plant two small Toomer's related trees on one side and transplant a fully grown oak on the other side.

Either way, the trees are just a symbol. War Eagle!!

I say that IF the trees die then I would keep the trunks intact and carve a tiger or eagle or something ot of them and then preserve them. Then the old trees will always be there. I would plant new oak trees behind the new carved statues. I might even consider having some type of structure design for the main purpose of looking cool when it is rolled.

Seems there's no shortage of ideas, but when the practicality of dealing w/ the trees , and the root system is realized, I think many will find that the options are going to be limited. It's my understanding that the trees will have to be removed, along w/ a great deal of the soil and as much of the root system as possible. Maybe a landscaper can give some better input.

I think TBTB will be able to better figure out a course of action, if they haven't already, in the coming weeks and months.
