Thoughts? Which freshman do you see coming in and taking a position?

Thoughts:

- It's kind of weird to see Blake and Benton at the same position; find it hard to believe they won't be on the field at the same time.

- Dismukes may end up starting at Center.

- Rose will see significant PT at CB.

- If healthy (hate we keep having to use that caveat), Reed will return punts.

- Neiko as a KR? Interesting.

- Like the way our front 7 looks on D.

By stealing a spot do we mean a strarting spot or a rotation spot?

If it's the latter, I see possible openings at both Safety backups, strongside LB, either DT spot, offensive guard, and definitely WR. That's in addition to the fact that Dismukes may win a starting position, and Rose is a near lock for the CB rotation.

Agreed, Blake and Benton don't play the same position. Neiko was back their "handling" kickoffs for A-Day. Seemed to be the lead blocker for McCalebb. We rotate "feature" kick returners and their "blocking" counterparts.

No Gabe Wright? I'll be surprised if he doesn't see the field at some point this year.

Bitter mentioned on the site that he left off all freshmen arriving in August on purpose, but even he specifically named Gabe Wright as being in the rotation.

He's not even on the team yet; how can he be on the depth chart?

My thoughts:

Interesting to see Eltoro at middle linebacker behind Holland rather than at an outside position. On the one hand, his skill set of being fast, hitting hard, playing the run well and being perhaps our most physical linebacker would suit him extremely well at that spot. On the other, one of his problems has always been being out of position or missing an assignment occasionally and at a position like Mike LB, where he has to be on target and know where everyone is at all times, that can be pretty bad. I guess he's just been too inconsistent to warrant a starting spot because all due respect to Jonathan Evans, I think Eltoro is more talented and explosive.

No surprises elsewhere on defense. I originally figured Neiko would be strong safety rather than free but I digress. I think both Florence and Therezie will get into the mix - with Florence the backup strong safety and Therezie probably eventually beating out Cole for the backup behind Neiko. I figure Whitehead will have a definite shot at PT at corner but will probably end up redshirting unless there are injuries. I think the 5 guys they have there now will be more than adequate.

I like the end situation - as has been said many times. We're a little young, but we're definitely talented and the two-deep at both end spots is experienced and talented. Wright and either Blackson or Niles will play immediately in the same capacity that Carter and Whitaker did last year though I think Lykes will prove to be a solid bakcup option.

Wide receivers will work themselves out eventually. We know Blake will start and we know that, if healthy, so will Reed. I figure we'll see either Denson or Coates or both in the two-deep at some point this season. Uzomah might play but I would wager a redshirt for him. Fulse will play this year, if only because of the moving around of Lutz from a more traditional TE role, to the HB, to the occasional slot. Fulse will be physically ready to play the position and I think he's talented enough to make a difference as a freshman.

Westerman will have a tough time cracking the two-deep at tackle. I really believe that. I think that Phillips will end up being good and I think Slade is definitely undervalued. But if there is a freshman OL who has a better chance to play than Dismukes, it's Westy. And QB, I have no idea though the commitment of Pike yesterday may open the door just a bit for the coaches to play Frazier as a freshman.

Overall, counting the early enrollees, I'd say that 14 freshmen play: Florence, Therezie, Rose, Dismukes, Fulse, Mason, Bray, Denson, Frost, Garrett, Wright, Blackson or Niles, Coates, and Frazier.

Just in case anybody didn't click the link, it's just a guess from a beat writer. The subject line of this thread is slightly misleading.

That said, thanks for posting!

Agreed, but this particular beat writer is miles ahead of most of them.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Whitehead get a crack at receiver when he gets here. At least one freshman will have to contribute at those spots. If Denson or Coates isn't ready, look for Whitehead to move to offense, at least for one year.

In spite of all the poo-pooing of the idea, Nosa Eguae played a number of plays at D-tackle in the A-day game. If injury or other mishap befalls Wright, Carter or Whitaker, look for more of that. Is it a great idea? No. Could it be a solution to a desperate situation? Apparently the coaches think so and I agree.

If the top listed player where in fact to end being the starter, that would mean only 5 out of 22 Senior starters on this years team. Lots of youth to deal with this year, but there is some experience on the field, mainly LB and secondary. Bates needs to turn into the leader on the D. 2012 sure does look good, though.

Great point. Coaches consistently say the kid is really, really intelligent, and really strong too.
