Why GT left the SEC

This is a really interesting read. I never realized the rub between Dodd and UAT. And the "140 rule" - how ironic...

And tulane left soon after that. Tulane probably made a big money mistake. But the conference did not need two vandy's.

GT made a mistake. The NCAA evetually cut the number of scholarships anyway. The ACC thing is better than being an independent, but the ACC is a weak conference compared to the SEC.

This article is a perfect example of what GT is like and who they think they are, vs reality. Reality is that they are a bunch of haughty, elitist jerks. They think they are too good for everybody else.

One interesting quote from Dodd, when the SEC was discussing a round-robin schedule which would include a home and home with every other member over a certain number of years: "Georgia Tech will never play a football game in the State of Mississippi."

For decades Auburn had to go play them in Atlanta every year. In one time frame, (probably before anyone reading this was born) we lost to Tech 15 years running over there. Did we quit? NO! Then came the time when Auburn won 10 in a row. Tech cancelled a series that was nearly 100 years old because "their schedule wouldn't allow it." The next season, Auburn was replaced on their schedule with Furman.

It took forever to get them to play in Birmingham every other year. Finally, they came to Auburn in 1970. I was fortunate to be in the sold-out stadium when we beat them 31-14 (I think that was the score, Pat Sullivan and Alvin Bressler hooked up on an 85 yard TD pass) with Bob Hope in attendance.

Ever go to an Auburn/Tech game in Atlanta? If you've got a girl with you, she will be insulted, just be ready because it will happen. That was such a known fact that one consideration of which girl to ask to go to the Tech game with you was her ability to handle such a situation. One year the Tech students threw so many empty whiskey bottles at the Auburn sideline that Coach Jordan had to borrow a crash helmet from one of the Alabama State troopers that accompany the team.

The only reason they are not now #2 on the "most hated" list of Auburn opponents is that we don't have to deal with "The Bugs" on a regular basis. If a giant sink-hole opens and swallows GT overnight, I'll laugh like hell and go find something to roll near Toomer's Corner.

People can say what they like but Bobby Dodd and the Crotch Crickets got the big head. They thought they were better tna anyone else in the SEC and thought they could be the ND of the South. It might have worked out if it hadn't have been for the Atlanta Falcons coming to town. The Falcons were the demise of GT and caused GT to get back in a conference. GT was humbled and getting out of the SEC was one of the biggest mistakes they ever made. For whatever reason, they just don't fit in the ACC,

Don't know the entire history of the AU-GT series, but obviously they played in Auburn at least once in the days of train transportation--hence the story of greasing the railroad tracks and pajamas at the "Wreck Tech" parade.

During the hiatus in the Auburn-Alabama series in the middle of the 1900's, Ga Tech was our biggest rival (presumably because of the engineering school rivalry)

That's an interesting point. I suspect that may have happened way back in the dark ages, say around 1900, before Tech came to think of themselves as so high and mighty. In due time I'll go dig out some of my old Auburn reference material and look it up, the answer to that is worth knowing.
