DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means.

“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.

“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.

Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34 percent in Pontiac and 24 percent in Southfield.

“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.

Tyler-Ruiz said only 10 percent of those who can’t read have gotten any help to resolve it.

The report will be used to provide better training for local workers.

I wonder what "community organizer" is responsible for this. Democrats have ruined and are running most of the big cities in the US.

I dont think this is an argument you want to have.

College graduate rates don't exactly make your argument for better cities. Not to mention, the map shows state levels. He specifically mentioned big cities, many of which are a complete mess. Now whether that can be laid at the feet of Democrats is debatable...but that graphic doesn't counter the argument.

I suppose it doesnt directly counter his argument. I guess I just wanted to share that graphic.

So 90% of those that currently cannot read did not attend an elementary school that taught the basics of reading??

Nor does it show graduation rates among racial demographics, which are fairly equal across state lines.

The half that can read left Detroit.

Because they were the ones who could read the road signs and the handwritting on the wall.

Spending more money is not the answer. If the parents want their children to try and learn, they will.....

I think we had the money spent vs. education received argument a couple of years ago. Atlanta city schools $14, 011 per child. Just give me half of that towards a private school and my kid will receive an education/life experience beyond imaginable. School vouchers would go a long way in getting education corrected in this country. The ones left in public school would get a better teacher to child ratio and the ones that choose private school will be more apt to overachieve. GOOD private schools would pop up in areas not even heard of before. Catholic schools have been in the bad part of town for years. They would immediately increase in number. And they would set their prices to meet whatever the voucher amount is for. But education in America has become another liberal black hole. We spend more money trying to figure out how to educate children than we do actually educating them.

Why not try a school voucher program for 5 years and then evaluate how its working or not? It cannot be any worse than what we have now.

Oh. And half of the Detroiters that cannot read English, can still read Arabic. I bet they know their sharia law.

Common sense isn't equated by graduation rates. ;)

Serious question???? If 80-90% of Americans had at least a BS/BA, what would the value of that degree be worth? I'm all for college degrees, but a diverse population across social and economic lines is not a bad thing as long as there's a driver for growth at all levels of society. We have taught our citizens over the years to accept laziness and allow others (hispanics in general) to take the very jobs we used to create at lower levels.
