Chizik's Salary?

I did have one question or thought about Chizik's salary and coaches salary in general. Why does he recieve a $100,000 bonus for simply making a bowl game and a $50,000 bonus for winning one? I may have my figured reversed there but that is illogical.

Why any AD would pay a bonus for a team making a bowl game is beyond me. Making a bowl game in today's college football environment is about as much an accomplishment as scoring with the school hoe in high school, for when everybody does it how much of an accomplishment can it be? (We have watered down the post season with a myriad of meaningless bowl games)

Furthermore, shouldn't Auburn's expectation being much greater then making a bowl game???

This is another way schools lose money on post season by offering bonuses to coaches for post season accomplishments. If Auburn made 4 million for a BCS bowl game but all the bonues they gave out was 2 mil they certianly did not make 4 mil for going to the game.

Furthermore, I would pose this one final question, with school routinely LOSING money by going to bowl games why are coaches rewarded for losing money for their organization?? Anyone got an answer?

The CEO of Time Warner Inc, Don Logan is an Auburn Alum if his company when through 8 straight quarters of losses I doubt he would recieve a bonus. This is illogical.

Frankly Auburn is a place of higher education this money would be more well spent towards academics imo.

Just another example of NCAA Division 1 Football lacking any sence of logic and intellect in its operations.

If he makes a bowl, 100k. If he wins, it's in addition. So 150k.

Well, I think you have missed a key element in your initial question. Chizik doesn't get a bonus for getting Auburn to a bowl game. Your amounts are also backwards. In order to get the bonus, Auburn has to be in a BCS game. Here are the bonus levels from the contract (per Phillip Marshall)

$100,000 for 10 or more victories in a season.

$50,000 for playing in the SEC Championship Game.

$100,000 for winning the SEC Championship Game.

$50,000 for playing in a non-championship BCS bowl game.

$100,000 for winning a non-championship BCS bowl game.

$200,000 for playing in the BCS Championship Game.

$400,000 for winning the BCS Championship Game.

$25,000 for an APR score of above 930.

$50,000 for an APR score of above 950.

$75,000 for an APR score of 1,000.

My interpretation of this is that if Auburn went to (for instance) the sugar bowl and lost he would get $50,000 bonus. If we went to the Sugar bowl and WON he would get $100,000. I don't believe he would get both bonuses added together, but I may be wrong on that. Same with the SEC title game and the BCS title game. He gets one bonus or the other but not both. Again, i may be off on this but that's how I see it.

Let me know if you can get any of that money earmarked for academics. Eliminate the athletic program and see what happens to academic donations. You might have a point if AU was a private school, but even then, I doubt it. Academics and athletics would be two entirely separate entities if it weren't for the facts that the athletes were students and the academic institution receives benefits due to athletics.

I suspect CGC works longer hours than DL, the vast majority of the athletic budget comes from the football program not the school. Time Warner would do well to invest more money in media interests that advances our society, they choose to spend money on dribble that negatively impacts society. They make that choice to make money.

I'd be an AU fan if they sent the fraternity all-stars to play the iron bowl. I am in favor of any rules the NCAA makes to ratchet down commercialism in college sports, but the college presidents make the choice to make more money.

Not CGCs problem.

If it were up to me and I could make it universal, I would rule that no athletic coach could make more than the university president.

There'd be some university presidents really rolling in it.

What the hell does that even mean.

Here is my point. If AU goes to the say Outback Bowl Chizik gets a bonus but high probability the school losses money.

Where I am going with this UCONN lost 2 million bones going to the Fiesta Bowl yet I guarantee you Edstell got a bonus for that?

How much sense does this make? I really think 90% of this board is totally in the dark on the economics of college football, the post season and bowl games.

This simply isn't true. Apparently you missed my post above that details his bonus schedule. It makes no mention of any bonuses unless we are at least in a BCS bowl.

I missed this in my initial reply, but you really need to come down off your high horse. I'm not sure what gives you the idea that you know more about this than the rest of us. Quite frankly you don't. There's been a definite pattern to your threads in recent months. It seems you can't start a thread that doesn't speak on a negative aspect of the bowls. You hate the bowl system, we get it. How many ways are you going to continue this tired crusade to constantly state the same thing?

No, 90% of this board does not share your hatred of the bowl system. We are quite aware of the economics involved.

While the initial bowl game may cause the university to lose money, the rewards are sometimes felt afterwards.

Apparel being sold.

More people come to games the next season because of success.

More recognition for the university that goes beyond athletics.

Look.. I am sure that these colleges would not support athletics so much if they lost money on it. How many people have went to Auburn because they grew up rooting for them in football?? A LOT.

We are all entitled to our own opinion but I find this difficult to believe. No way 90% of this board has read Death to the BCS and if they have I would be shocked if 85% of those dont walk away with the conclusion the current system including bowl games are flawed.

I am not anti bowl game IF the NCAA runs them that would be much more fair and equitable.

IMO it's one thing if coach bonuses negatively impact our academic program coffers, but unless one believes the student athlete concept doesn't apply to any football player out there, the success or failure of COLLEGE athletics should should not depend on whether they make $ or not for the college.

You know, if the coaches salaries came from the university's general fund it would be something to discuss. Since their salaries come ONE HUNDRED PERCENT from donations to the athletic programs and sponsorships, it's hardly something for a concerned citizen to be concerned about.

So should I be concerned that my $300 it cost me to purchase my BCS Championship game ticket (which was a horrible seat I might add) was probably used so John Junker can go on a bender with strippers?

Should this be a concern of Auburn, who the Fiesta Bowl clearly profited off of?

Not true. The athletic dept. has a seperate budget independent of AU in general. Musch of the revenue comes from Tigers Unlimited "donation" but a lot more comes from ticket sales, concessions, parking, etc. The cost of tickets is getting ridiculous.

We're saying the same thing. The athletic department generates its own income. Coaches salaries do NOT come from student fees, the general fund, etc.

Since I was called out I will respond. I was wrong. There are some schools who give coaches bonuses for simply making a bowl game which is mindblowing.

I would disagree with what is being said here Auburn increased student fees to pay for the new Auburn arena from my understanding.

I think the follow up point to all of this if the NCAA actually took ownership of the post season there would be SOOO much more money for all these universities. You would not have schools having to chase more tv dollars by changing conferences.

I am at a loss how anyone can defend a post season that is such a financial albatross for schools? Anyone got any answers?

Should we consider College football a charity the way they give away all of their money??
