Heisman like numbers

In 1985, Bo Jackson won the Heisman Trophy by rushing for 1786-yards on 278 carries, rushing for 17 TD's.

Gus Malzahn could not find a Bo Jackson on his roster so he combined Onterio McCalebb and Michael Dyer for 277 carries, which translated to 1897-yards and 14 TD's.

In 1971, Pat Sullivan won the Heisman with 281 pass attempts for 20 TD passes and 2012-yards passing.

In 2010, Cameron Newton attempted 280 passes for 30 TD's and 2854-yards passing.

Thanks Gus!

I bet 23 and 5 beat those numbers this year...

I was talking to a friend about this the other day and I think they could both go for 1000 yards this season. Without Cam running like he did last year, I think they'll both rack up alot of yards.

I absolutely agree. I think Dyer and McCalebb are the best backfield combination in the country. If our Offensive line comes together like I think it will, those two will be running wild.

I'm also not one willing to bet against Gus Malzahn.

For both of them to get over a 1,000 yards each means both will have to have rack up big yards in the OOC games other than Clemson and be consistent in SEC games. I'm more interested in who will be taking the snaps and directing the offense, Trotter or Clint.

If McCalebb averaged just 2 more carries per game in 2010, he would have rushed for over 1000-yards and neither back had more than 95-yards in the cupcake games. Dyer will likely be in the 220-240 carry range in 2011 and McCalebb we likely be in the 125-150 range. The Tigers will likely play in 13 games in 2011 so both backs will need to average 77-yards per game to hit the 1000-yard mark.

I feel like o-mac may not be as productive as some are predicting. Don't get me wrong, I believe he is a huge homerun threat, but I feel like a lot of his sucess was due to defenses getting fooled on Cam up the middle and allowing McCalebb to take the corner. Without that threat, D's will be able to focus on the outside. Just a thought.

The success of our running game will depend to a great extent on how well our o-line comes together. If they can open holes for Dyer inside, O-Mac will still be a threat on the corner. If they play like freshmen, we may have some major offensive struggles.

I also believe a good bit of the RBs success was product of the overplaying Newton's run.

No doubt. Also some pretty amazing blocking on the perimeter by our WRs.

Of course, Ben Tate was good for over 1400 yds w/ Chris "Greased Lightning" Todd back there, in our first year in the system. And there was no home run threat from an injured McCalebb, outside of a T-Zach reverse, to offset Tate.

So who knows. It'll be fun to watch them grow as the season goes on.
