sAULTy71 0
I woke up this morning (which is now a feat in itself) thinking about how much CGC and Shug seem to be so very similar. Insignificant stuff can work itself out. Don't even mess with it. Deal with what is necessary now...absolutely no delay. Put the players' best interest at heart, after all, they are our FAMILY! Prepare the team to win and count on the preparation and abilities of the players to carry that thru. Winning at "all costs" is not an option. Too much like other SEC coaches "down thru the years". No politics! The best player at any position is the starter, the way it should be. Do not accept a loss at all, but accept getting beaten by a better team (which is no disgrace) and work toward beating the better team next year by getting better ourselves. I always felt that Shug's #1 goal was to change boys into men who would have the capabilities of having a positive impact on society. A very close 2nd was to win. If CGC can follow in the steps of Shug, with the talent we have now, he should be able to produce some great teams and a National Championship or two or....... WhiteTiger 2
I like CGC but I'm not quite ready to put him in the same class with CSJ. I think he may be on the right track to get there but only time will tell.

around4ever 4,139
They do have some similar traits. I call it quiet confidence. They never say(said) anything that puts pressure on their teams (bulletin board material for other teams). They are considered teachers of men. They both reference(d) Family and Faith alot. They both are(were) great speakers in private and in public. You would not know CC is a great speaker by his interviews but go hear him speak if you get the opportunity. It will make you proud to be an Auburn Tiger and glad that he is. They both are(were) great motivators. But you are right WT, it is still too early to put CGC in that class. Lets just say he has great potential to be there in the future.

Don`t think he is really comparing apples to apples or the like. Time will tell how he turns out as a coach but I think we can agree at this point he is a man of character and principle. augolf1716 22,040
This is just a side note but a lot of people do not realize that Shug had a photographic memory. If he met you one time 20 years ago he would remember your name. When he would come over to the frat house we would test him. He got the biggest kick out of that. Just thought I would share

It was my first year at Auburn. The 75 season was not a very good one. I hated to see him go out like that. That was also the beginning of a dark time in AU football. Always remember that Goliath was a 40-point favorite over Little David. -- Shug Jordan

auburn4ever 1,266
Coach Jordan coached 25 years here and won 176 games and a national championship. Coach Chizik will be coaching in his 2nd year and he's only won 8 games to this point. Gene doesn't even come close to Shug. Not yet anyway. Shug's overall record was 176-83-6, 77-52-2 in SEC 5-7 in bowl games and a national championship in 1957 and that 17-16 win in the Punt Bama Punt game. auburn4ever 1,266
Coach Jordan retired after the 1975 season. Doug Barfield was then hired in 1976 and he went 29-25-1 from 1976 through 1980.

auburn4ever 1,266
If Gene stays here 25 years and wins more than 176 games and also has more than 1 NC, then we'll talk about comparing him to coach Jordan.
telling tiger 156
There are a lot of similar characteristics about the men. I respect CGC immensely, but a year is a bit early for that, but I'm not above hoping the comparison is an accurate one.
Lynx34 0
Those of you referencing the vast difference in record and on-the-field achievement are completely missing the point the OP had. He is just talking about who they are as people and their character off the field as well as their general attitude. I'm not old enough to have been around to see Coach Jordan, much less be an Auburn fan at the time, but by all accounts there seems to be some overlap in the criteria the OP is discussing. auburn4ever 1,266
The Barfield years were indeed dark years in AU history. But so was tiny Terry's last 3 1/2 years.

PapaWill 0
I played under Coach Jordan and have watched and listened to Coach Chizik.....both are gentlemen first and foremost. Both believed in building the right foundation/character of the players..........both put defense as a priority. I hate to admit it..............I think Coach Chizik will go down in Auburn history as our best Coach when he retires! I loved Coach jordan and Ms Evelyn...but Coach Chizik has proven that he knows how to surround himself with the right kind f men it takes to build a program. Of course we all have to be patient; but it is just my opinion...this is a good man striving to make everyone around him great! (Hated to use that phrase but it is very appropriate)
