August 9th Practice Report

The Duke

Recommended Posts

The Auburn football team practiced in full pads for the

first time this season on Monday, working out for two-and-a-half hours

on the Athletics Complex practice fields.

The Tigers opened with special teams work before moving to individual

and position drills. After more special teams, much of the rest of the

practice pitted the offense against the defense in team drills.

After practice, head coach Gene Chizik stated that he had hoped for

more energy from his team, particularly after a day off from practice on

Sunday. He noted that there were some bright spots, but was not

satisfied overall.

“I was really hoping it would be a more physical day,” said Chizik.

“After having an off day yesterday, I really felt like today would be

more high energy. I’m disappointed in that. It wasn’t as physical of

a day as we needed to have since we went live for the first time.

That’s not to say there weren’t some good things happening, but

overall, I’m not pleased with the day. We’re going to get that fixed

tomorrow.”

Monday’s practice came after five members of the team earned their

degrees from Auburn earlier in the day. Seniors Mike Blanc, Mario

Fannin, Byron Isom, Ryan Shoemaker and Terrell Zachery all went through

graduation ceremonies prior to attending practice.

The addition of those five graduates gives Auburn 11 players on the

current squad who have already earned their degrees. The other six who

had already graduated include Mike Berry, Zach Clayton, Zac Etheridge,

Michael Goggans, Aairon Savage and Craig Stevens.

The Tigers will have their first two-a-day session of practices on

Tuesday. The first practice will begin at 9:55 a.m. CT, while the second

will start at 7:10 p.m.

Auburn opens the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against Arkansas State at 6

p.m. CT in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be televised by Fox Sports

Net.

I wish I knew what happened at practice, but since I live in B'ham AU's practice only got about 30 seconds on the news after two longer stories about the renovated turdville stadium.  Wow, I did not know the turds had increased the capacity of their bowl to hold even more turds so they could watch the turds swirl around on Saturdays while cheering turdily through their toothless gaping mouths.  Rant over; I hate bammer.

FYI:  There's some good practice video and post-practice interview video on PMarsh's site:  Bono, Dyer (amazingly mature and engaging), & Chiz.

Its never a good thing that coach isn't happy with practice, especially when it comes to an energy level/effort standpoint, but these 2 blocks right here are FANTASTIC.  Proud as hell of these boys.  War Eagle, Grads!

Intensity may make up for some lack of ability - but this team has ability.

Getting the mindset changed to being an aggressive winner, ready to take on all challengers, cockiness backed up with performance - that may be where Chizik is headed. And I'm all for getting this team in the mindset that the SEC Championship is the first goal for this talented crew.

I dont think hes settling for anything this year... everything needs to be perfect. They were in a teaching phase last year... now they expect these guys to understand more of what the coaches expect from them.

Im sure they will have a sense of excitement when the season gets closer and the position battles begin.

Congratulations to all of the players who have earned their degrees!  Regardless of how your football career ends, that is something no one can take away from you!  WDE!

I wouldn't read too much into what Chizik is saying at this point in time.  While he's probably being truthful in his assessment, the spirit of 2 a days tends to ebb and flow and has done so as far back as I can remember.

Well if the best is what you want then you are going to have to require the best every time out of your players. Nothing wrong with setting the bar higher and expecting more because when game time comes around and you are in a pickle it will pay off in the end.

yea, i really want to think that chizik is really holding these guys to a really high standard, which i'm perfectly okay with.  Anything but absolute perfection and absolute intensity, is less than acceptable, and honestly that works for me.  The guys are working hard and practicing well, but Coach always wants more.  Man I wish i could see the entire practice so i could see how Dyer, T.Reed, and everybody is doing!

Chizik isn't like the former coach. He rarely gives out any praise. He expects the best effort and focus everytime these guys step out on the field (practice or games). I like it.
