Battle Hymn of Republic played during games?

Why do we play the Battle Hymn of the Republic at games? Any idea where this started? I know Georgia also does this.

I think that it's actually "Glory, Glory to Ole Auburn" but to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Why do they play Living on a Prayer during games? Only teenage girls in the 80s should like Bon Jovi. That song blows and need to be replaced soon.

Oh come on its pretty cool when they turn the volume down and the student section belts it out. Not living in the 80's, I dont see bon Jovi as that bad.

Wow this is surprising to me. Like I said earlier I love when the student section sings it, and the band is great with it too.

Anyone who was at the '08 LSU game knows why we don't want to hear this anymore!

Yes, that's true, but does anyone know where this started? It is kind of strange for two Southern schools such as Auburn and Georgia to pick that song, so there must be some reason we use that tune.

My wife can't seem to tell the difference between "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "I've been Working on the Railroad." I catch her singing the latter at AU games all the time. She now does it just because it bothers me.

And who ever thought that "Livin' on a Prayer" was a good song for football was a moron and should be summarily shot with no trial.

As a student, I think most of those criticizing the use of Livin' on a Prayer don't realize that most of the students find it to be a pretty terrible song too.  It's sung ironically because of how stupidly ridiculous it is and makes for a great time.  It's just in good fun.

I haven't liked Livin on a Prayer since the first time it was played.  That's a great message for our football team. "We don't really have much of a chance, but wouldn't it be awesome if we somehow won?" Doesn't sound good when you put it that way does it band?!

I know a lot of pretty Au coeds who love living on a prayer.  If you hadnt noticed id say 90 percent of the student section sings it.  Granted not my cup if tea eiter but to ignore the obvious has no credence.

As do I, but just wondering why we use it. Someone from another school once asked me and I had no answer.

Those same coeds love Lady GaGa also. Maybe we should play her songs also.

It is Georgia's actual fight song...we sort of took their idea and switched some letters around.

Of course I like our version better!
