Spotlighting Jonathan Evans - LB

Last season, Jonathan Evans was thrown into action as a true freshman because of a depleted linebacker group. He finished the season with 28 tackles but had his best game against Alabama, where he recorded 8 tackles. Slightly undersized in 2009, Evans had to rely on his quickness to the football, which was evident in the following play.

The play…

On this particular play, Alabama faces 4th & 1. Auburn stacks the line with Jonathan Evans blitzing the “B” gap and Craig Stevens blitzing the “C” gap. The play is an inside run with Mark Ingram but Evans quickness allows him to go virtually untouched in the backfield. Stevens is picked up but Evans beats the right tackle to make the play on Ingram. Evans isn’t able to take a clean shot on Mark Ingram but Evans was able to wrap up Ingram’s legs until support arrived to finish off the play for no gain.

Evans gained weight and muscle mass during off-season conditioning drills and should be in better shape to face the physical challenge of competing in the Southeastern Conference. Last season, Evans played in the 205-210 range and he’s currently tipping the scales at close to 230 pounds. He had a good spring and he’s currently having a solid fall camp. Look for Evans to play a major role in the linebacker rotation in 2010 and for the unit to improve overall.

You showed how good he was on that play last year and the last paragrah really wrapped up his potential to be MUCH better this year.  Good Job.

How tall is Evans? Just from going back and watching games he only looks 5' 9 maybe 5' 10". I know they probably list him taller but I thought he was a corner until I noticed what number he was.

We ought to have a Very good LB corps this year.  One that has depth and can be kept as fresh as possible.  No more 4th quarter letdowns.  :we:

If he turns out anything like his brother Chris then I will be very happy. Chris was an underappreciated player who really never got his due. He was a helluva linebacker who should have gotten more playing time earlier in his career imo.
