RunningBackU Injury Curse!

Im starting to see a trend among past AU RB's. Not ALL but a few.

Ben Tate - Got injured first play of the game (not sure if serious however)

Kenny irons - Preseason game ended his career with an ACL injury

Caddy Williams - Injury prone

Ronnie Brown - See above

Bo Jackson - Injury ended his career

Even current back Mario Fannin has a dodgy shoulder.

Most of these are from the last 10 years, is it just plain bad luck or was there something else behind the poor injury record of our past RB's.

the average career of an NFL running back is 3 or 4 years... It's a brutal position, especially at that level. The ones that have the longer careers usually have a bit of luck, and learn how to protect themselves.

As stated, running back is an extremely taxing position, especially at the highest level...and don't forget Stephen Davis and Rudi Johnson, both of whom had pretty decent NFL careers at RB.

Of course it has nothing to do with a curse, but it does seem that we have had some bad luck lately in the NFL.  On the positive, Cadillac and Ronnie could be back, almost as good as new.  I hate it for Kenny, but it was actually two blow-outs.  Pray for Ben's not being too bad.  William Andrews ran the football for Atlanta until he dropped; never a more durable back in the league.  Brooks and Cribbs held up for a long time , too.

I feel really bad for Caddy, Ronnie, and Ben.  Could have something to do with the pounding these backs take week in and week out for four years in the toughest conference in college football.  Get well and stay healthy guys.  War Eagle.

I wish there was some way to determine when the cut tackle came into wide-spread use.  It is extremely effective, but I wonder if it has had anything to do with a lot of injuries (kind of like horse collar)?  Not blaming that... I've just always wondered.  :dunno:

I think it has a lot to do with the size and speed of these backs, not to mention the pounding they take.. Gotta remember when you are 200 plus lbs, and moving at a very quick speed, a sudden change in direction or a forceful enough plant puts a lot of stress on the knee. Think of it like this....imagine doing 100 miles an hour in a car, and then suddenly making a drastic change in direction, then think about what effect the momentum has on the car. In a smaller car, it might not have as dramatic effect as it would have if you are in a larger car... As it relates to running backs, the more momentum and mass you have, the more stress, and impact it has on the knee. My theory is completely hypothetical, but I would love to see a comparison of knee injuries suffered by backs with a more slashing style vs those that are more straight ahead, bull you over type backs... If this truly is the case, then I would think with the proper medical studies training could be developed to teach these athletes how to move in ways to reduce the likelihood of such injuries....

Also just another quick thought, but a comparison of the average age of these backs, and when these injuries most often occur would be cool. Who knows, maybe it happens more often to younger backs trying to prove themselves vs the more experienced backs who understand how important it is to protect themselves.

Tucker Frederickson, William Andrews, Joe Cribbs, James Brooks, Rudi Johnson, Stephen Davis, James Bostic, Brandon Jacobs, Lionel James, Brent Fullwood, Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Heath Evans, Ben Tate, Tommie Agee and Bo Jackson.

Present and past above some short careers some distinguished. When you have the power that most of the ones listed have. defenders go for the legs most of the time which means knees, joints, ligaments, bones. ya its unfortunate but no curses I don't believe in them anyway. It could seem that way since we send so many to the NFL at that position which is one of the most punishing of all.

NBC is reporting that Tate might have broken the ankle and could be done for the season.  :(

I really really hate that.  He looked very good on the carry that he got injured.  He hit the hole hard and fast and got at least 10 yards on the play.

happened last night.  reported originally as a possible ACL... then news that it was a high ankle sprain.  this morning, the team hasn't officially released anything yet, but some reporters are saying season ending broken ankle.  heart breaking either way.

I feel for Ben I was ready to watch him play.  I hate these preseason injuries during meaningless games.  The USC RB Stafon Johnson has terrible luck also.  He was the RB that dropped the wieghts on his throat and during his first NFL game he is out with a season ending ankle injury.

I don't think "RunningBackU Injury Curse" is accurate. Injuries aren't limited to Auburn RBs, of course, and I'm sure there are plenty of other teams that have had players with injuries.  As others have stated, RB is a brutal position to play.

I heard it was a high ankle sprain, but the way he was rolling around I won't be surprised if he broke it or tore something.

Maybe i was overreacting, but i get so excited over seeing a new AU RB in the NFL and hated seeing Kenny's career end.

I thought Kenny was gonna try to make a comeback this year.
