StatTiger 3,188
When the 2010 Auburn Tiger defense takes to the field on September 4th, one of the primary focuses will be on the defensive line. Coach Tracy Rocker is searching for a solid rotation of 5 DT’s and 5-6 DE’s to work with during the course of a game. Senior Michael Goggans is destined to be one of the defensive ends that will likely start or at least see significant action. Goggans enters his senior year with 38 games under his belt, which includes registering at least 2 tackles in 16 of his last 25 appearances. His experience will be invaluable, especially when it comes to recognition of the little things and nuances of the game. Here is a prime example of his recognition being an advantage to stopping the play. [move]Michael Goggans vs. Arkansas 2009[/move] On this play, Arkansas is lined up in an offset I formation, in which they traditionally run from. At the snap, the RT actually pulls to his left, leaving Goggans unattended, which normally would be a tip the play will be a run to the left side of the formation, away from Goggans. He initially steps inside to play the run but recognizes the quarterback has an open hand on the play-action with the running back (red circle in image #2). The quarterback doesn’t utilize the football in the play-action exchange, which tips Goggans on the play-action. Because Goggans recognized the empty hand on the quarterback, he was able to redirect his angle of pursuit towards the quarterback. The play was a naked bootleg, which depends on the backside DE reacting to the run and not the pass. Goggans is already on top of the QB as he breaks out of the play-action, forcing him to throw the ball away to avoid the sack. Though Goggans is not known as proficient pass-rusher, he has been efficient against the run. At 6-3, 261, Goggans has also been utilized in the interior line (DT) on passing downs, making him a versatile role player on the defensive line.
