From the Desk of the Mayor...

I am fully behind Chizik and agree everything he's done so far has been good. I just hope all those things translate to wins. War Eagle!

Is Gus still driving?

I seldom comment on here..but lurk with a borderline Aubsession....but I had to chime in on this one...Mayor, this may be your best one yet. Period.

I graduated in 05' shortly after the season of the 'Hard Fighting Men' of '04..what a special, dare I say, MAGICAL time on campus that fall and winter was. No one will ever replicate that...nor will any bloviating media slob, COMMONtator, or rival  EVER be able to take that away from us as fans, students, alumni and certainly not from the young men who gave everything they had and more to go undefeated in the hardest conference in college football.

That being said....that weird feeling that has been dormant since the fall/winter of that year has been attempting to rouse itself from its too-long slumber....this year may, indeed, be VERY special.  Though these fellas won't repeat history (as they say) I am getting a sneaky suspicion that they will make quite a bit of their own before too long.

War. Damn. Eagle.

By far your best article.  Thank you for saying what needed to be said.  Patience will still be required, but that it will happen is not in doubt.

WDE!

While I fully support CGC and his staff, he still has some questions that need to be answered. So far he's certainly beat expectations. I like the way he's running the program and the direction it's headed. That being said, here's some things that still need to be determined.

- Can he win the big game? So far his biggest win has been Ole Miss. Can he beat Bama, LSU and UGA on a reasonable basis?

- Will he be able to maintain the recruiting momentum? All indications are he will. He'll need to have solid classes for the next couple of years to get the program back to where it needs to be. While top 5 classes are great, I think top 10 are more reasonable.

- How will CGC handle assistant coaching changes? No doubt it's coming at some point. My thought is he was smart enough to put this staff together, he's smart enough to find solid replacements.

- Can Auburn be a solid football team week end and week out. We were so inconsistent last year. I think a new system and depth were the major issues here but we'll see. We need to avoid the 1/2 half meltdowns.

I think we've yet to see real Chizik football team. Again, I like what I see so far. Either way it'll be fun to see how it plays out.

Outstanding read Mayor. Seriously, Coach Chizik has surpassed my expectations in almost everyway so far. If he does it again on the football field this fall, then even the Debbie Downers will have to get on board. Of course they will have to ride in the back.   :we:

Right on Mayor!!!

I was also not sold on CGC the day or even 1st few weeks of his hire. I was also still angry with the dismissal of CTT.  I got really excited about Auburn’s future when CGC started hiring his staff.  One of the most important things a head coach does is hire assistants.  CGC has shown the ability to hire a great staff and to keep said staff pointed in the same direction.  I have no doubt some of Auburn’s assistant coaches will move to take over other programs (happens to all successful programs), but I have complete confidence CGC will make good hires to replace those who leave.

I also love the way CGC recruits.  He has shown the ability to get top players and more importantly to get top players who qualify and make it to campus.  I get excited to compare classes on signing day and see which school has the better classes, but the real comparison and class ranking should be in August when we see who actually made it on campus.  CGC has shown the ability to get guys who not only help Auburn look good in February, but are on campus in August.

Auburn will have some ups and downs in the next several years as all college football programs in the SEC do, but I have confidence that CGC is the right guy to lead the program

Mayor, this is quality stuff!!  Perhaps ST should find a way to make this required reading before we can login.  During the ups and downs that we will surely have this season; when the "Chizik un-solds" come out, we will be reminded of where we are and how far we've come.

Good article but I don't completely agree.

Chizik & Co. have done some great things so far but I'm not completely sold.  1 full season does not provide enough information for me to make a decision one way or the other.

Great article.  I never had the chance to meet Coach Chizik during his tenure as DC.  I have met him and heard him speak, and I am very impressed.  What a great motivator he is.

I am very excited about what he is doing on the Plains and look forward to watching it unfold, beginning Sept. 4

You are so right about his hiring Tracy Rocker - that was a great hire....makes you wonder why it never happened before now!!!

Bring It On!!!!

WDE

Mayor, in slight defense of the media, the hype Miles gets is that he is a risk taker at best, and an incompetent who had the luck to follow Saban and land a job where you can sign in state 4 star talent if you can just avoid offending the recruits...

Personally I like that the media has been low key on us, though that is changing quickly.  Good write-up.

Somebody might have already pointed this out, but you forgot Coach Boulware!  Also, don't underestimate the impact that bringing in Travis Williams has on this team.  He's a true Auburn Man, and someone that the players can really relate to because it hasn't been long at all since he was in their shoes.

I think there were probably more fans expecting the hire to be Gene Chizik than some realize.  This may not be so,

but I felt from the beginning that he already had the job before the search.  Remember, the job he did as defensive coordinator at AUand Texas.

I will admit though, I was not completely sold on the selection.  It didn't take long to get me on board, however.

He was definitely the right selection.  WAR EAGLE!!!

Great article Mayor! In fact there was a thread this past week discussing this very thing and you explained my feelings about Chizik perfectly. I just think it is hard to not see the excitement and strong foundation he is building. It is difficult for me to think any fan was expecting more in the short time he has been coach. It is not difficult to see he is driving this mission of his down all the right avenues. I think most of all for me is he has shown his love and dedication to making Auburn football an elite program year in and year out. I have no doubt he will achieve his goals and more. WDE!!! Thank you again for the great article.
