I would like to know your thoughts on Bill Oliver when he was our DC and then when he took over for Terry Bowden when he walked out on his team in mid-season.

What you say may be true but, IMHO, he has one of the best defensive minds around. I'm really surprised that the little guy didn't try to hire Oliver after he got bammer gig.

The "little guy" seems to be doing alright on his own.  Benedict Arnold is a perfect name for "Brother", IMO.

To have inside info on AU the year Pat Sullivan was a SR, Oliver cut a deal with Bear to go to work @ Bama. Shug was   "informed", and then told Oliver to "expect a call"

^^This^^ is very true. It's actually worst then just cutting a deal with the bear and getting inside scoop on AU and Pat. But I'll leave it at that.

All the above, I ignore the era that Oliver was coach. Two things Terry could not do while in Auburn; recruit and keep his pants zipped.

Maybe another reason he didn't hire Oliver was because the little guy would have to look up to talk with Oliver. He wasn't about to look up to anyone. Also, he's control freak and I'm sure B O would slowly take the spotlight off the shortone.

I remember 1971.  We were both 10-0.

Funny how a Benedict Arnold with playbook, audibles, and play signals in hand can lead to holding the Heisman QB and number 88 to one touchdown.

Only Tennessee held Auburn to one touchdown and it was first SEC game of the year. Beasley was out with a concussion most of the game.  Came back in and caught winning touchdown in last couple minutes.  Sullivan and Beasley were automatic.  30-40 was the normal score in 1971 for Auburn when Beasley was in most of the game.

Nobody could run with Beasley and he could outleap/scrap for the ball.  You had to know where he was running or where the ball was going and have a headstart.  Sullivan had an arm, but Beasley could run it down.  He could be leaning backward looking behind him and still at 99% speed.

I still say Bama would not have figured out Auburn by just scouting the team.  I think Bear knew that so he hired Bill Oliver.  After all Bill set the defense against Beasley everyday in practice.  I think he had a hand in making some of AU's reads and plays.  Shug had to go to trick plays early.

Those of us who lived with the mullet nation through the 1970s know we were better than 31-7 loss.   Also know that BAMA never left it to "may the best team win."

I met Wayne Hall a lot when he would come to Auburn Quarterback club dinners in Anniston. I really enjoyed talking and listening to him and he always treated me with respect and it wasn't because I'm in a wheelchair. I had then and I still have a great deal of respect for coach Hall. I'm very surprised no team hasever hired him to be their DC since buster brown fired him, Kurt Crain and Rodney Garner.
