How Much Improvement Will We See On Defense?

I am very curious how much improvement we will see on defense. Personally, I think that we will make great strides. If the dreaded injury bug stays away, I think that we will see improvement that will take us into the top 5 defenses in the conference. I think that our freshman will mature as each week goes by and will contribute more than just rest for the starters. I think that Roof's hands were tied last year and that we will really see what he can do by midseason. What are your thoughts?

I think we see a 20-25% improvement on defense.  I think we will especially see this late in games since we will be able to give the starters a breather or 2 or 3 in the games.

Man that would be sweet but I would guess 10-15% in terms of yards per game.

They are certainly better is some areas and possibly all areas. About 300 to 320 total yards per game is about as much improvement as Auburn can expect with the high play count expected this year. I think they averaged just over 374 yards per game in 2009.

I do think there will be more improvements in the following areas:

Sacks, Auburn had about 28 in 2009 and there could easily be a substantial increase there.

Fumbles Gained, there were seven in 2009 and that should improve.

Interceptions, there were 17 interceptions in 2009 this could improve this year.

Scoring Defense, there were 27.54 points allowed per game in 2009. It should be possible to reduce that to 18 to 24 points per game in 2010.

Very reasonable assumptions. With an improved offense even a 10% improvement could let us win the West.

I'm looking for more turnovers and sacks.  With the offense we run points and yards are going to be given up that is just reality.  Hopefully, we will be potent enough on offense to make the defense's job a little easier.  No more having to win 3-2 or 10-7 games.  We averaged 25 points a game on offense in the sec schedule last year and averaged 27.375 points given up by the defense.  if we could boost offense to an average of 30 points per game and only give up 25 points per game I would be happy with that improvement.

Personally I think a much more potent, and consistent offense will do wonders for the defense.. Example: Think of the games where we jumped out to an early 14 0 lead, and then imagine that as a quick 17 or 21 point lead. That is a huge physiological advantage against opposing teams, because instead of a quick touchdown to get back in the game, they need a couple touchdowns. When faced with this situation, most teams abandon the run game because they feel they have to open it up to get back in the game. That's really gonna allow our defense to pin their ears back and attack the qb. If that happens, it should really give our defense a lot of opportunities at turnovers, because of mistakes made trying to get back in the game. Consistency will really allow us to put our foot on the throat of opposing teams.

Personally, nothing would give me more pleasure than hanging 50 to 70 points on bammer this year. I wanna hang so many points on them, that we have to send them a bronze statue of CGC to place in their walk of champions.

Chiz will need at least 2 more recruiting seasons (2011 n 2012) to get us back to the stout D we have been used to the past several years. This is due to depth but also bc of the type of offense we run. We basicly need 22 starters on defense due to our high octane-fast paced offense.

I am guessing 3-6 pts better...which says alot considering the points I am expecting our offense to put on the

scoreboard!!!

I think the defense gives up about 20 points a game but mostly because the offense is going to put up about 40 points worth of quick points a game which will tire our defense also. :wareagle:

The biggest difference will be our very favorable home schedule and who we play this year compaired to last year.

West Virginia offense was better than what Clemson is bringing for example.

Only Alabama and Arkansas will have better offenses imo. Everyone else is worse due to...

1) S Carolina starting a Freshman QB.

2) UGA best offensive weapon just got arrested, new QB.

3) LSU's offense was horrible, need to find a RB.

4) Clemson lost that WR and Spiller.

5) Ole Miss lost McCluster.

6) Miss State needed Cam Newton... new QB I believe. Need to find RB.

See my point?

I dont know, i hope we are back to the type of D you expect from an Auburn team. I saw someone say earlier you basically needed about 22 defensive starters I would say that was pretty close. If some of these younger guys play like world beaters then we will have a good D. if they play like freshman we will always have the problem of our D giving out of gas while our O keeps putting them on the feild. Even with losing AC I am more excited about our D line. as far as the LBS go it will be nice to have the depth there, if Bates comes out and plays with the level of intensity that we have seen from him at safety then we are going to have something nice there. as far as DBs it just depends on how they come back, I know ZE is the feel good story and Savage is as well but I feel like how good we are back there has a lot more to do with Mike McNiel if he comes back and plays the way he is able then I think they are a force, if he never regains form then I think we are still better off than last year. The D is what our season depends on, if they play like they have the talent to then we will do very well, if just a few things go wrong we will be having less fun

Ive often wondered how the vets coming off injury were dealing with the mental game of being off the field for so long , but then agian I believe the coaches will have them ready.
