AUMaitland 0
One of my usual golf buddies is an ex linebacker coach from Michigan. So yesterday we were talking about recruiting on the golf course. He recruited 10-12 players each year and said that a successful year for him would be to land 2 of the higher rated kids on his board (and several of his recruits are now in the NFL). While going through the recruiting process, I asked him how good was he at predicting which ones would commit or not. He said that even though you spend a lot of time getting to know a recruit (and family, etc.) it is pretty hard to "really" know someone when both sides are looking for something from the other. Obviously he had better indications with some recruits than with others but it is much more of a black box than what probably most fans think. And coaches truly are surprised a lot of the time when a recruit makes their decision. I thought this was worth sharing b/c I (for one) as a fan had lost a little perspective on how much the coaches know ahead of time or how much a coach can control the process. And although the coaches know a lot and control a lot, it isn't as much as I thought.

tinman 305
This post makes me think of Coach Troop's response to the commitment from Lemonier last year. It was suprise and elation. You are correct. Both AU's and FSU's coaches expected him to pull out the FSU cap as his school of choice, but 5 minutes before his press conference he called FSU coaches(Dameyune Craig and Eddie Gran) to tell them his choice. They were surprised. Abd Trooper and Chizik were pleasantly surprised too.
TXaubie 546
Great post!! I was starting to convince myself that coaches know who they are going to get and almost stage when they announce it publicly. Boy was I wrong.

So our coaches were surprised when he put on the AU hat or just relieved he didn't change his mind again?

It's better to be pleasantly surprised than unpleasantly surprised, and it's the right thing to do to give FSU the bad news person-to-person and not have them find out via a TV broadcast. Rickys Rants 0
I think a lot of recruits let the coaches of the 'non-chosen' schools know ahead of time. It is a classy thing to do considering a lot of schools would spend additional time and money sending representatives and reporters to the announcement. Marcus Lattimore was a good example last year. We all knew he chose USCe before the announcement because Auburn cancelled their trips to SC for the announcement.

It was Stephen Davis who was there for the announcement and I think he had become a 'mentor' to Marcus regardless of which school he chose. I just wish he had used a little more 'influence' to push Mr. Lattimore to become and Auburn Tiger! LOL

That was hilarious (in a bad way because I wanted Lattimore to come to AU) and just goes to show you how out of the loop/out of touch Shoney's Big Boy Tate is when it comes to covering AU sports. wde
