The Auburn football team inched closer to the 2010 season

opener with a two-hour practice Wednesday evening on the Athletics

Complex practice fields.

Wednesday’s practice was trimmed back slightly from Tuesday’s

workout, both in length and in gear, as the team wore shells Wednesday

after practicing in full pads Tuesday. Thursday’s practice, which will

be the final practice prior to Saturday’s season opener, is expected

to be even shorter.

The Tigers once again focused on special teams as well as individual

and position drills in the first portion of practice. Much of the latter

half of practice focused on work against the scout teams.

Following practice, head coach Gene Chizik stated that he was pleased

with the team’s performance during the workout.

“We had a good practice today,” said Chizik. “We’re coming down

to the end in preparation and trying to sharpen everything up. Tomorrow

we need to be sharper and crisper. It’s game time for our guys and

they’re excited. They’re ready to play.”

Auburn will open the 2010 season against Arkansas State in just the

second all-time meeting between the schools. Auburn won the previous

meeting, 27-0, during the 2006 season.

The Red Wolves, led by ninth-year head coach Steve Roberts, finished

4-8 in 2009, including a 3-5 Sun Belt Conference record. Arkansas State

was picked to finish third in the Sun Belt this season in the league’s

preseason poll.

The Tigers will return to the practice fields Thursday at 5 p.m. CT.

Saturday’s season opener against Arkansas State will kick off at 6

p.m. CT in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be televised by Fox Sports

Net.

A limited number of season, mini-season and single-game tickets,

including tickets for Saturday’s game, are still available. For more
