So, what say you...what type of D do you enjoy watching most...

We have had each of these styles/philosophies over the years and each has been successful to one degree or another...

Unless you have an all american secondary who can trump every pass and all american line backers who can stop every run, you need pressure on the ball.  attack.

Well from what I saw last season I have to say an attacking defense is the way to go.  I felt like when we had zero pressure on the QB we had little hope of stopping the other team (cough Northwestern cough).  In the Northwestern game it seemed as though we had zero pass rush.  In the Bama game we played to stop the run but when they started passing the ball they made their come back and beat us.

Now I think the key to this years defense will be to find a way to pressure the QB on every play.  Even if it's a run play our goal should be to have a guy or two heading towards the QB at all costs.

I love to see a D attack an Offense.  It takes very good corners to do this, as they will be left on an island a lot.  If you can get an OC think first about protecting his qb from what you are doing, you take away a large part of the playbook.  To do this you must first be able to stop the run.

With the speed Chizik is acculmulating on defense you can definitely tell we will get faster, more agressive. Reason #3 why Darren Bates at LB is a great idea. It also helps when you have a pass rush good enough to where you dont always have to blitz. See Alabama game 2005.

1 and 2 were the safeties coming back and the lack of depth at LB.

You most definately have to get pressure on the QB during pass plays.  I don't care how good your coverage is, if you give a QB all day he will find somebody to throw to.  The more pressure you can get with only 5 rushers the better.  You can't blitz every play.  The thing I liked about the bend but dont break defense is that it lets the offense make mistakes.  Eventually the QB is going to throw one he shouldnt.  Until then you just dont give up the big play and keep everything in front of you.  When the O gets down to a short field it is harder to move the ball.  There are more bodies in less space.  It shrinks the zones.  This type defense can be boring to watch sometimes though.

I really liked the "T. Rocker" mug era...

It seemed like every play he was in the back field and grabbed all the running backs and QB...

Sorted through the pile until he found the ball...

Seriously, I don't know that I have ever seen another college DT that consistently penetrated and shed blockers as well as Rocker....= many negative yardage plays...

I am hoping that he will be able to instill some of this in his proteges this year...
