Very concerning. MSU runs the spread and has more talent than Ark St. Need to grow up quick and veterans need to step up and play like Savage.

Terrible fundamentals.  As a tackler, you need to contain the opponent and limit yards and depend on support from your team.  We go for the big hit and miss too much...plus the arm tackling.

The defense did improve in the second half.  I agree they have a ways to go still.  There is alot to work on in two days.  But, I promise you they will be fine.

D-Line looks great!!!!!

LB's........Need some help on zone.....they attack the run like crazy but getting killed on passes.

DB's........if they all played like savage we would win it all hands down!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but the D is trash. I don't think you can make the no depth argument tonight after watching that. Awful tackling, not pressing receivers and the pass rush was inconsistent. I know Ark. St's o-line is a good group, but we need more pressure on the QB. If I had to pick a positive, I thought the interior line played good. Fairley is an absolute beast, Blanc is solid and the young guys (Whitaker and Carter) looked good tonight. If we don't get better in a hurry on that side, it may be a Big 12-like shootout in Starkville on Thurs. night.

I think the problem with the D is that they're playing a soft 4-3 zone against 4 wr spread sets.  Throughout most of the game they were giving the WRs 8-10 yard cushions and any spread offense will eat that up.  Midway through the 3rd quarter they started playing some tight man coverage and completely stopped them, but then went back to a soft zone and gave up some more yards.

Couldn't say it any better. Good observations

Well, according to the coaches they did not know what AS was gonna do on offense.  I am sure the first half defense was pretty generic bend don't break with the soft coverage.  The defense stepped up and did shut them down in the second half after adjustments were made to defend the offense they had been running.   I cal that pretty good coaching, do you?   They went back to soft coverages when the 3s went in.   Nobody has mentioned Bates, what a game he had in his first start at LB.  WTG Daren!!   I think our D will be improved by Thursday and then even more by Clemson.   WDE guys!!!   Don't give up on the D.

After seeing SOME adjustments after half, I S.L.O.W.L.Y. started to calm down.

Now that we have a W in the bag, here's my 2 cents:

I don't believe we'll see as many cushions come Thursday night. I was yelling at the TV for most of the evening, but I believe we'll play some solid coverage against a more athletic State team.

Got to remember that Arky St. brought in a new OC. Makes it a bit more difficult to prepare for a team when you can't see what that team did last year.

I'm going to add some optimism: Glad to see we blitzed a bit.

Looks like Ark. St. done a good job of watching film from the Northwestern/Outback Bowl game from last year. I hate when we play 10-12 yds off of the receivers. That's just giving them 5-6 yds a catch automatically. We have got to get the corners up into the receivers faces more. Good job for by the offense but rb's got to work on holding on to the football. Offensive line did a heck of a job. Keep it going.  WDE

I agree with everything except the part about RBs holding on to the ball??  Fannin fumbled one time and if you didn't notice he got the crap knocked out of him by two defenders and then they drove him into the ground.  I will give him the benefit of the doubt on that one.  Omac's fumble was correctly ruled as him being down, but yes he needs to hold on to the ball.  WDE!!!

I loved seeing Zac on the field but he sure was out of position on several plays.  I'm sure it's just cobwebs.  Savage was a difference maker tonight!  Bet that QB got tired of picking Curry out of his belly button!

I second this. I really wish the adjustments could be made in the first half, instead of half time. Didn't understand last year and still don't.

Thank you. Looks like they went with the Northwestern plan.

I thought it got better in the 2nd half.

Anybody ever consider we probably did most of our prep work this week on miss st instead of arky st.  That combined with the scarcity of tape on asu with a new offense might account for the huge improvement from 1st to second half on d.

Didn't consider that but it seems logical.

I think we need to clarify something here our Run Defense was spectacular 35 att and only 49 yds for a 1.2 per caryy avg. That is a pretty stout number. Now when you add the passing we gave up 320+ yds a good majority on those quick flat passes. I am not totally happy, but I am happy what I saw overall in improvement. Let's also remember it is tough with the first two turnovers and held them to 10 points in 2nd half. So we are being a little hard on the D for a decent showing in the first game of the season. I am excited by our DL. War Eagle!!!!
