Nice to see an improvement in our defense

Gimme back that fish!

Recommended Posts

I saw an improved defense in the following areas:

*DLine-Did a very good job stopping the run (gave up only 43 yards on the ground! Bama gave up 83 yards on the ground to San Jose State)

*Improved tackling in open spaces

*Better angles

*Didn't over-pursue as much

However:

When the DBs played off the line, we gave up 6 to 10 yard plays like clockwork. When the DBs played in, we were much more effective.

I'm not sure why Coach Roof likes to play our DBs off the line so much.

Right on post!

D will be much improved this year...real key is if the back ups can develop quickly enough to help in the last half of the season...

Run D played excellent...

When AU had to make a stop and shutdown A.State at beginning of the 3rd qt, we manned up at a critical time in the game...

Our defense wasn't that bad its just our safeties i believed were playing from the line too much and our cornerbacks therefore struggled. There were some good plays though i might add.

Give Arky State credit.  Their QB was on target with his passes and their receivers made some great catches.  They're a pretty good offensive football team.

I was just about to bring this up.  The 60 yard pass early was busted coverage, almost all the other passes were excellently thrown balls that our dbs couldn't get to.

I thought our defensive line played much better yesterday overall but still lack CONSISTENT pass rush.

Despite losing one of our starting linebackers, I thought they still did a very solid job of coming up and stopping the run but it seemed like they hung their hats on the run and didn't do a good job of dropping back to help with short slants.

Our corners and safeties did a good job of making their tackles and Savage and Etheridge were very active (I didn't see Mike McNeil, not sure if he even played).  The corners were soft but I still think the drop off on talent is a big factor in our secondary.

Overall I was happy with the defense, take away one busted coverage and it was pretty good effort today.  We gave them the ball two or three times on our side of the field and they are a better offensive team than anyone gave them credit for.

And is it just me or does it seem like when we do blitz, it takes FOREVER for our guys to get to the QB? Look, I thought Ark. St.'s O-line did a good job pass blocking, but it's still Ark. St. I just worry about how we're gonna get to Ark., LSU, UGA and Bama's QB if we had a hard time getting to Ark. St's QB tonight.

That 60 yard pass early had a beautiful setup to it.  It looked like a draw.  It wasn't.  The QB rolled just a little making it look like an option.  This sucked in our dbs.  Boom.  Pass to a man with no one near him.

It was a Gus-look-a-like idea.  Beautiful.

Our Defense will have to get a lot better in a hurry or else we are gonna find ourselves in shootouts all throughout the season.  Our DBs can't play off of receivers like they did so much last night or else, we will give up easy completions and 300 passing yards a game.

Yep. I thought the D-line played Ok. Rare pressure from just the front 4. Everyone else was terrible. This was Arky St. We will face a similar offense on Thurs with much much better personel. We over persued a lot! Freeman  and Etheridge especially. It was obvious to see why the coaches have a love/hate relationship with Freeman. Hopefully we will not continue to run LB's on slot receivers all year. Tackling didn't seem that much improved. The first guy missed to much.

And food for thought..... If Roof's defense  doesn't improve, he needs to tuck in his damn shirt. He looks like a slob.

Ill keep it simple for some who have a hard time understanding... we didnt do a whole lot last night because thats what Roof wanted... the starters were gone by half time, and 13 freshman played last night. There were bound to be a few mistakes here and there... no sense in playing the starters against a team we beat by 4 touchdowns.

Starters were not gone by Half... that is wrong. Backups were worked in here and there but the starters, including the whole secondary played into the 4th.

35-23 in the 3rd, Arky St with the ball on the 30 going in. The scoreboard at the end of the game is misleading IMO.

I understand playing a lot of young guys last night, but for the love of god why didn't we play Trotter a least the fourth quarter?  He needs reps to learn and last night would have been a great time to do it.  Getting five minutes at the end of the game to hand the ball off 5 or 6 times doesn't help him in the long run.

I am with you brother. We don't have a championship D right now. I realize we have some young guns, but ARK St moved the ball at will. Was Roof being overly conservative to not give up the big play ? I don't know, but MSU will have better athletes in their spread system AND they will also have a better D. Roof had some outstanding D teams at Ga Tech so I am hoping he can show dramatic improvement.

War Eagle !

I was hoping to see more of Trotter too... but Newton was really on a roll and it was good to see him get some great work in... if we can take care of state, perhaps we can see him a tad earlier.

Keep in mind that I think Malzahn wanted to get Trotter on the field sooner, but ASU went on about a 4-5 minute scoring drive and they kicked the field goal... the freshman were in the game at that point and when Trotter finally got in the game there wasnt but about 3 minutes left.

Superfly, we have butted heads before and Im sure that this wont be the last time... but youll be on the defensive wagon soon enough.

everybody jumps on when things go the way they want them to.

The one thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned is that our D played 4 quarters. They weren't wiped out by the 4th quarter, even thought the majority of our scoring drives were fewer than 5 plays and TOP leaned heavily in Arky States favor, especially early on.  I'd say that's the biggest improvement of them all.

Well I thought the backup D-line got more pressure on the QB than the starters. Probably becuase when the backups were in Roof had the secondary together by then. We absolutely had them beat talent wise, Roof just needed to get his scheme right. Oh, and whats with the light bulb by his post?

The Defense tackled really well. these guy were making good tackles. It's a major improvement. and I am very happy to see it.

Or problem doesn't lie in individual skills but in the set up of our defense. Our biggest problem is playing too soft of a zone. we are too far off the line giving the other team at least 8-10 yards to catch the ball. as long as we continue to play such a soft zone we will get beat for dink passes(10-15 yds) every time other teams pass the ball, ensuring long drives for opposing offences keeping our Defense on the field.

Our Offense scoring quickly isn't the problem. Our defense needs to do their job. the length of time the D spends on the field correlates directly to what the defense does not our offense. if they go out and get a 3 and out then they will be off the field and our O gets the ball back. so please stop using our quick scoring offense as an excuse for our defense's inadequacies.

The D was head hunting. It was nice to see us finishing tackles and pressuring the QB.I liked what i seen from our D overall but tighter coverage would have been nice.Great Job and War Eagle guys.

Yeah on their last drive arky st was moving the ball pretty good till either curry or sanders lit up their back up qb on a blitz after that play he was not the same.

I was happy with not seeing our defense gassed by the start of the 4th. That was my main concern. I hope to see more pressure from the d-line from now on. It would help us a lot if we could get pressure only bringing 4. I think we can shut down the short passes with another body in coverage, once were getting pressure with our lineman only.
