What I noticed

I came away with a number of serious observations from the game last night.

1. Where was Mario- yes he had 2 recieving TD's but he had less carries than McCalebb, Newton, and Dyer. Was he hurt, or did they just stack the line against him?

2. Flaws from Roof- It took Roof half the game to realize they were throwing the swing route to the slot (like we did for Fannin all last year) and to put a defender on him. That had naught to do with the players. When they adjusted A-St had no successful sustained drives the 2nd half.

3. CAM ROCKS- He makes it look too easy. That one run he had where he went back and forth dodging people reminded me of McNabb and Culpepper. He had to have a breather afterward (great throw from Caudle on the reverse too)

4. Freshmen playing well- Dyer was electric, and there were a couple of shoelace tackles when he thought he was gone. Kitchens had a nice catch out if the backfield, even though it was called back. The new D-linemen were awesome, especially Whitaker. And Craig Sanders made like 7 tackles on special teams. He was everywhere.

So where was Mario?

I wondered the exact same thing, but some people on here made a great point IMO. We play on Thursday night, a short turnaround, so why waste him in that game when we have an SEC foe coming up? It made perfect sense to me.

I think that is exactly what it was, and also a great opportunity to det Dyer's feet wet. Didn't take long either

I personally think the coaches are trying to get as much experience as possible, as soon as possible, on offense and defense. Dyer needs to get acclimated and Fannin doesn't need to get hurt. I would guess mid to late season they'd want them to share carries. I don't think it was to Mario's fault it was just the game plan. I could be wrong.

Did Bynes play every snap?

N o but he still played more than probably any other defensive player.  But since the mlb is like the qb of the defense he probably had too stay out there to get the young guys lined up right.

No it didn't did it? He was every bit as good as advertised. It really is so scary with all the "toys" Gus has to work with. The OL played well also, which wasn't surprising to me.

Josh was all over the field last night. If he missed a tackle, I didn't see it. He had a VERY solid game IMO.

I noticed what Chizik said would happen in an interview before the season started. He said the young guys were going to get significant playing time because they need it to be able to play against the SEC opponents.  He also stated he didn't care what they score was either.  I like the fact the players made decisions so they can learn from them.  Experience and game play is the key for the young ones.  I can't wait to see what we have in store for Miss St.  It will start off tough but we'll pull out with the lead sooner than we think.  War Eagle!!

He missed a sack on one of the first drives of the night but I would not expect him to whiff again

Mario had 3 rushes for 14 yards.  Almost 5 per carry.  I would not worry about him.  Miss St. will be a physical, tough game.  No need to let your starting running back carry the ball 20 times.  I predict Mario will have over 100 yards on Thursday.

if mario doesn't play well thursday he should be moved to his position last year.

I wouldn't jump the gun that quickly. However, I do believe he is a tremendous h-back. He can make things happen in a hurry.

I noticed but did anybody else notice that McCalebb was not finishing his runs

with any power or authority at all.

Dyer is the real deal and I would not be suprised if he is not the starting RB by the

South Carolina game.

I'm not sure I can quite agree here.  I didn't see McCalebb shying away from contact, if that's what you mean.  Dyer and McCalebb are different RBs with very different body types (McCalebb: 5'11" & 185 lbs, Dyer 5'9" & 215 lbs).

No one is going to mistake McCalebb for a "power" back, but he has great speed and finishes hard for someone who lack the thick body of Fannin or Dyer.  I don't know who will be listed 1st on the depth chart next year (it may well be Dyer), but as long as he's healthy, OMac is going to get his share of touches.

I noticed on several that he looked like he let off. One of his early runs he looked like he jumped on the ground, although I'm sure he didn't. I thought last year he was following directions when he was hurt. Get what you can and get out of bounds, don't risk the contact. Not sure about yesterday. I'll keep the faith in him though.

Those are my exact thoughts, I sure would like to see McCalebb get those 2 or 3 extra

yards at the end of his runs.

I'm sorry, but he's not the kind of back that you'll see "lowering the shoulder" on people and "powering" for 2-3 extra yards.  Watching the replay, I see him avoiding taking the 'big hit' a couple of times, which is pretty much what the coaches have asked him to do, I'm sure.  He also lowers his shoulder a couple times, though he's not exactly knocking people around (that's just not his thing).

I agree, that's not really his style. It's not a knock on him, he's just not built to be a power back. He is a fly-by-you-see-you-later type back.
