Cam Newton Heisman

It's not going to happen. I like seeing his name mentioned, but Cam won't win the Heisman this season. If he has a good year, though, he'll be a front runner next year.

wayyy too early.  Cam is a machine, no doubt, but we haven't gotten to the SEC defenses yet.  If he keeps putting up these numbers and Auburn wins most of its games, then he'll be in the running at the end.

Cam will be there when its all said and done.No doubt in my mind.Hes the best QB in the country.Urban Meyer is missing him dearly right now.

100% AGREE!! He will have his plays like anyone that he will like to have back, but he has as much talent, athletic ability, poise, etc. as any QB I've seen in while.

Cam is good, but he has alot of room to grow and improve.

I know all players have room to grow and improve. Not aware of any QBs in the country that you could say Cam is not in their league.

I agree. But you and I are both Auburn homers. Most of the voters for Heisman are not. It's a beauty pageant, and if he goes crazy and, say, throws for 2,500 yards and rushes for 1,000 while leading AU to the SEC Championship, yeah, maybe he wins the Heisman.

Otherwise, they will want to see a second year of dominance before giving it to him. He likely doesn't win it if we don't win the SEC with just one year, because there will be too many questions about whether he's more a product of Malzahn's "system". We all know that last part is total BS, but your average fan has no clue.

I totally agree with that assessment. I think he has the potential and realize your thoughts on the voters. It's exciting though. It's obvious after seeing him in action that he creates many opportunities.

  • 4 weeks later...

The weekly article on the Heisman race at the ESPN web site has been updated following this weekend's games and it essentially says the Heisman is Denard Robinson's to lose at this point with his absolute pinball game numbers for rushing/passing/total yards consistently this year.  That said, I was a little surprised (happily nonetheless) at this follow-on comment:

"But if D-Rob somehow, someway, should allow the door to open wide enough for another player to sneak into the conversation as a Heisman front-runner, the leader in that clubhouse is another quarterback. As I see it, it's one of three QBs.

Closest to Robinson through five weeks is a young man who has so far, and perhaps unfairly, gone mostly unnoticed when it comes to Heisman chatter. Auburn junior Cam Newton has taken a team most considered an SEC afterthought and made it an SEC threat. He threw three touchdown passes in limited time Saturday as Auburn rolled over Louisiana-Monroe. He's thrown 12 touchdown passes this season. He's run for five more. He's firmly in the conversation, but a ways behind Robinson."

While Robinson could certainly stub his toe, unless he gets a season ending injury (soon) or just totally falls off the deep end with interceptions and fumbles, he wins it.  However, if Cam continues to play like he has thus far this season against the teams we have left on the schedule, I think he has a real chance of being in the top 3 and going to NY for the ceremony AND being a frontrunner next year...which is not a bad spot to be in.  Just my thoughts.

War Cam Eagle!

I think Cam will be a finalist but not win. Denard Robinson is just in a world of his own.

We all know that it doesn't go to the best player in the nation. It goes to the best player on the best team in the nation. I don't see Michigan getting into the top 10 so I really don't think he'll win it.

Well, certainly being in the hunt for the NC gets extra exposure for an otherwise outstanding player.  But the statistics (sorry StatTiger) say you are only 25% accurate over the past 20 years--not bad in baseball, but otherwise not very strong in an argument.  Using the 2 generally recognized polls and then the BCS, only 5 of the 20 most recent Heisman winners have been on the National Champion team.  If you had said, "We all know that it doesn't go to the best player in the nation. It goes to the best OFFENSIVE player on a perrenial top 10 team," then you would not have an argument with me since Woodson is an anomoly.  BTW, here's how it looks.

Year Heisman Winner Team National Champ(s)

If Cam continues to play well, we have enough ranked teams on our schedule (LSU, Arkansas, UAT) to get him some exposure and consideration.  Hopefully Michigan will run into some stiffer competition that shuts down their offense, otherwise Auburn could win the National Championship and Cam will still come in second in the Heisman voting.....just sayin'

Okay, let me say this:

I don't think Michigan is going to be ranked by the end of the season. They have no Defense and besides Robinson they don't really have any playmakers on Offense. Once they actually start playing better defenses then I think you'll see the one man-show of Robinson decrease drastically.

Just my opinion of course and if Michigan is a top ten team at the end of the season then I'll admit that I'm wrong.

Yeah, I'd probably agree that Michigan is not likely to be a top 10 team at the end of the year (though DR may prove us both wrong).  However, they are the all-time winningest team in college football for both total wins and winning percentage, so I think you can safely say their reputation gets any of their superstar players into the discussion.  Regardless, I'm a Cam Newton fan!  War Eagle!
