Tom Lugenbill Q&A on Cam Newton

Q: Auburn also heavily recruited Lattimore. Could Lattimore and Dyer have co-existed in the same offense?

"I don't think there's any question it could have worked because Gus Malzahn's offense is designed to be a two-back, play-action game. That's the issue they run into with Onterio McCalebb because of his size. They can't count on him every down. If they had Lattimore and Dyer, they'd never have to take them off the field."

Oh what could have been!!

He made a lot of sense.  One thing he said that contradicted what I've been saying is that Clemson just put eight in the box and played.  I had the impression they were bringing people, but he's saying they just whipped our OL.  So did State.

Now, I did say that we typically bring only six blockers (plus one or two decoys) on running plays.  So if people come up with eight, we have a problem.

Yeah that all sounded like good points. I think the question every one has is where are the medium range passes? It just seems like this would soften the defense up a bit and make the safeties freeze for a moment or two before heading deep or rushing up to the line of scrimmage. I'm sure there is a reason the coaches are not doing this, I don't know if they are trying to maximize Cams playmaking ability or what. But I hope we see some more passes against s. carolina. I say open it up and see what shakes out, they are a good run d team and I really don't want to see us running into a wall over and over. I still have faith that our team can be very good this year...

we have thrown one slant pattern this year and trotter did it in the ark st game. we need to  use this. not every play but 2 or 3 a half. if fannin gets back it will help too. i think cam looks for him. without him only da. i like cam but he needs to grow fast. i believe more success in the passing game is the only way to help the running game. im gonna hurt some feelings here but our oline is very overrated. you can slice that up however you like but just watch the games. we are supposed to be a running team and we cant run inside w/out misdirection. we have to create ways to run between the tackles because the line is not moving people.
