WarDamn2010 177
if he thought that we should spread the ball around more, cam replied, "It's not up to me sir, it's all coach Malzahn, Gustav Malzahn" There is no way Malzahn is telling him who to throw the ball to...is there? 3rdgen 2
Probably on certain plays designed to go to that guy. But if that is true on every play the training wheels need to come off and turn him loose

touchdownAU 6
It was on an interview on rivals. I watched it earlier. I am not to football smart other than playing NCAA on xbox or playstation, but could if CGM is telling him who to throw it to could that be why Cam tends to stare down WRs? War Eagle!!! Vandelay 5
He was giving some pretty generic answers in the interview, I wouldn't look into it that much.
WarDamn2010 177
Still though, surely to God he would give a reporter something better than that right? I'm with yall, they need to take the training wheels off
45Tiger 0
I'm sure they are coached on how to respond to types of questions during interviews. I wouldnt read anything into it either. One of those deals where he didnt want to be thrown under the bus or throw anyone under the bus so he took the high road and deferred to the coach. it was a loaded question and he knew it. its about the best answer I could see him coming up with under the circumstances. thast actually one of the things I have been most impressed with is the way all our players come off during media interviews. there's not a more impressive bunch in college football in this regard! I have to take my hat off to CGC & the gang for this.
JMDurron 0
To my eye, it looks like Malzahn is doing a fairly decent job of calling/drawing up plays where the primary WR is at least partially open, while Newton is never looking at anyone other than the primary target on the play. If the early-season gameplan is to prevent any inexperience/decision-making/QB IQ issues from leading Newton to making bad decisions about where to throw the ball, it could very well be a matter of the coaching staff essentially telling him "on this play, throw to this guy. On this play, throw to this guy." The coaching staff does not appear to trust Newton to throw short/intermediate routes or to make reads during the play (aside from throw it or run it) yet, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he is being given single-target plays where most of the other routes are decoys. Hopefully he progresses with experience to the point that he is able/allowed to make reads on the fly. If not, he can still improve on his execution (particularly on deep balls, more line drives and fewer "pop ups", to use a baseball metaphor) to the benefit of the passing game as a whole. greenaj1345162886 0
If you guys are taking that literally, then I'm sorry but you are way over your heads. Cam is media smart and knows never to question the coaches and he has said the right things. It was a general response, not trying to say anything out of line. And I think they were referring to PLAY CALLING, as in, spread the ball around by having plays that give it to more guys. Common guys, you're trying to make a post about something as simple as this? Is this how much we are trying to pick apart things?
AUBL11 0
Doubt it's a big deal. It could simply mean that he's calling plays that are designed against a specific coverage. For those types of plays you have to make reads based on how one or two players respond to a receiver. i dont think any coach in the SEC at least tells their QB where/when/who to throw to. AU lb's are beasts 2
I really doubt malzahn is telling him who to throw it to, but it wouldnt shock me. Ive seen it done by plenty of coaches, though mostly in high school.
