Our needs are to great to have a complete turn around even with the Portal.  In this years HS class we would have to flip a lot of players most of whom would not help in 1st year.  Then we lose our best two DL in Wooden and Hall plus though not great we lose almost whole O-Line.  Basically we are looking at rebuilding O-Line and D-line both starters and backups.  It is hard to say how good our DB's are because when we had games like bama where we were not getting pressure we were asking them to cover for to long.  We have two very good RB's in Hunter and Alston plus it appears we still have Cobb coming in so we are ok there.  Need an infusion of talent at LB,  current WR's might be ok but need more big ones, we are fine at TE and who knows at QB.

I am looking for filling out HS class some of whom will be projects especially O-line, Portal to start rebuild but will still have holes.  The good to great teams have enough talent to rotate to keep players fresh and to be ready for injuries. I don't think we can pull in enough talent to be able to do that in 1st year.

I always hope for the best but what I would like to see if enough of a talent infusion that we can beat the cream puffs, be competitive with the big boys for 2 or 3 quarters before lack of depth hurts us and a scheme on both O and D that hides our weaknesses.

I was about to post something optimistic and then read this...man it is bleak.  Even pulling in a bunch of transfers and JUCO players it's going to be tough to compete with no O or D line.

Having young children may also be a personal factor for him. He may have the support system and community here that he and his wife feel are the best place for them to raise their children and if a hard-to-turn-down offer comes along he may look at a change then?

True.  I'll admit I was only thinking of his development as a coach and not the personal side of his situation.  I think we are probably all guilty of looking at the coaches and players as just parts of the machine and forgetting that they are real people with real families.

This is the third system he’ll be under in four years at Auburn. Not sure what leaving would do for him unless there is a specific coach or system he wants to learn under.

Sure. But it is all here at Auburn. There is something to be said for traveling the world, broadening your horizons (in football terms, I’m not suggesting he go backpacking across Europe) and developing connections in other parts of the country.

  4. First off: I want him to stay. I love what he did over the last four games and the players obviously love and respond to him.

I would love it if in six years he becomes our Nick Saban and coaches at Auburn for the rest of his life. But that’s where my question comes from: if I envision a future where Caddy is the head coach is it better for him to go somewhere else, coach under some different systems, see what he can learn from them, see what works and what doesn’t, etc?

Or can he do that just as effectively under Freeze?

Just something I’ve been mulling even before Freeze was hired and wondered what others thought.

  5. I just got off the phone with a longtime friend who is a lifelong Bama fan (and alum).  His daughter is in her freshman year at Auburn and he has begrudgingly begun rooting for Auburn when they are not playing Bama.  He said if we hire Sanders he is going all in on Auburn.  Orange and blue everything.  His comment was that he doesn't know if Deion is a good football coach, but Deion knows who the good football coaches are and can bring them in to handle that while he visits every high school in the states of Alabama, Georgia and Florida and racks up recruits.

Another point for Sanders, his NFL career is regionally relevant.

He covered the bases of both Atlanta and Dallas.  No Falcons, Braves of Cowboys fans alive don't know who he is.   He also has reach all the way to California for his brief but significant 49ers days.

I'd wager that the vast majority of young NFL fans in this area gravitate to Atlanta and Dallas.  Prime is on top of a major sports demographic in general fandom.

I grew up in Texas as a Cowboys fan. Sanders was one of the few players that I loved and hated. Loved him on the Cowboys. Hated him on the 49ers.

  7. I have to admit I have a morbid curiosity with what he could do in one more year.  At this rate I could see him going from metaphorically burning the program down to literally setting things on fire.  Maybe he could salt the earth at Jordan Hare so nothing will ever grow there again?  Perhaps he could leave dead fish around the athletic complex?

I am a tingle with excitement!
