  1. Andy Reid tried to get greedy at the end of the first half and it bit him in the ass. Calling their 2nd timeout when it was 3rd and 2 was colossally dumb. Timeout #1 after 1st down when TB didn't get much, eh, OK. The one after the gain to make it a much easier first down to get, nope. Tampa needed no more help at that point. Tampa's lines dominated KC's, and that was the biggest difference. NHL champs, AL champs and NFL champs...pretty amazing run for the city.
  2. Covid: Focused protection approach This part stood out to me, and I agree with it 100% "Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity." ...and this member of the congregation said "Amen." I know better than to think anything like this will happen, because common sense doesn't pay the bills or get people elected, but it is a breath of fresh air.
  3. Herbert scored our only TD in that steaming pile of a game in Gainesville. I didn't know until I saw it later on TV how close Von Wyl was to missing that last FG against FSU...just tucked it inside the left upright. This was the last year with the wider goalposts, and thank goodness for that.
  4. My senior year, and that team struggled most of the year...dodged bullet after bullet. We didn't exactly wallop Cal-State Fullerton in the opener, and that was a sign of things to come. Got by what ended up being a decent Ole Miss team 24-10 in one of the hottest games I've ever attended. 1:30 kickoff on September 15 in Jackson...miserable. Escaped with a tie against Tennessee. Good thing their FG kicker got the yips. I think it was the only time I recall Toomer's being rolled after a non-win. Last-second FG to beat Louisiana Tech Yanked one out of the grease against FSU...and returned the favor of their band playing "War Eagle" in 1989 by chopping them out of the stadium. Beat MSU the next week by 1...blocked a PAT to keep from getting tied. The next week was Florida, and the wheels came off...total obliteration. Lost HC to Brett Favre-led Southern Miss. Iron Bowl felt like running in quicksand all game...we handed them a TD (think it was about a 5-yard drive) and just could get nothing going offensively. Gutted out a win against Indiana in the Peach Bowl on a cool, drizzly, foggy day at old Fulton County Stadium. The Florida State game was absolutely the highlight of that season, but the cracks were starting to show, and it got worse in 1991 and 1992.
  5. Ran into a buzzsaw in the second half and couldn't stop the bleeding. Offense deteriorated into too much 1-on-1, and when that went in the tank, so did the defensive effort. To their credit, Purdue was excellent in the second half. 17 of 26 from 3 is tough to do during shootaround, never mind a game. Better days are ahead...nights like that one will hopefully be few and far between going forward.
  6. The loudest I have ever heard JHS was when Calvin Jackson returned a 95 yard interception against UF. I was 12 at the time. It was overcast and a little drizzly, but that place was full and loud. Can't wait for JHS to be rockin' again very soon. That play totally flipped the script of the game...Florida was already ahead 10-0 and if they would have scored on that drive, I'm not totally sure we would have come back from down 17-0...CJ's pick 6 made it 10-7 and it was game on from there. That team eked out a number of tight games...a lot of people forget about this one because it was earlier in the season, but there was a critical 4th quarter goal-line stand against Vanderbilt in a 14-10 win. They didn't dominate too many teams, but they made winning plays when they had to be made.

  9. Seeing the thread on the cannibalistic minks reminded me of this classic from WKRP in Cincinnati... "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!"--Mr. Carlson "The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement!"--Les Nessman LOLOL...
